Henrietta Lacks was a black American whose cells were used to create the first “immortal” human cell line. The unauthorized harvesting and use of Lacks’ cervical cancer cells would go on to provide countless medical breakthroughs — a complicated biomedical contribution Lack’s daughter, Deborah (played in the film by Winfrey), set out on a quest to understand with the help of journalist Skloot (played in the film by Byrne).

The film will follow the development of Deborah Lacks and Rebecca Skloot’s relationship as they uncover the truth about Henrietta Lack’s life and the ongoing “life” of her cell line.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacksfilm has been adapted into by legendary Broadway director/producer George C. Wolfe. He will also be directing the film, which which will be executive produced by Winfrey. Lacks’ sons David Lacks, Jr. and Zakariyya Rahman serve as consultants on the film, along with her granddaughter Jeri Lacks and her grandchildren Alfred Carter, Jr. and LaTonya Carter.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lackswill premiere on HBO on April 22nd at 8 pm.
