Free Comic Book Day falls on Saturday, May 4 this year, but the first New Comic Book Day of May is Wednesday, May 1, and DC is gonna give you something big for a whopping 25 cents. In this case, it’s DC’s Year of the Villain, a special one-shot that will set the tone for the summer’s DC events…and beyond. Written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Jim Cheung, Francis Manapul, and Alex Maleev (and a Greg Capullo cover!), DC’s Year of the Villain is building on and setting up the publisher’s biggest stories. And as you can probably guess from the title, there’s a theme here.
A key piece of Year of the Villain will focus on the book where the nature of evil in the DC Universe has most been explored recently, Justice League. And as with most things surrounding this current run of Justice League, it’s kind of tough to boil down into a few easy sentences, but DC’s press release for the book does a better job than I can…
“Following the events of Snyder and Tynion’s Justice League, Lex Luthor takes a major step forward, assembling his Legion of Doom for the final push to replace Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the League as the rightful leaders of not only mankind, but the universe itself, hoping to harness the power of Perpetua, the first being to be imprisoned within the Source Wall, now newly freed in the events of Justice League Annual #1. Perpetua’s storyline and Luthor’s plans to rid the universe of heroes will continue to escalate throughout the rest of 2019.”
DC also teases that fans should pay close attention to The Batman Who Laughs mini-series, “as the events of the final issue will continue to play out in this pre-FCBD issue, leading into a master plan revealed in a to-be-announced new series debuting this summer.”
And then there have been all the Leviathan teases peppered throughout Action Comics. DC promises that this issue will introduce more key elements of the “Leviathan Rising” story, with Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev using the special to “kick off a new status quo in DC’s dark world of espionage and terrorism; the repercussions of this new order will be will have major ramifications for the Man of Steel this Summer.”
Batman fans will get their recommended dose of villainy, as well, with the issue containing “clues to Batman’s upcoming battle with the villains of Gotham in ‘City of Bane,’ also slated to begin this summer.”
DC’s Year of the Villain arrives in comic shops on May 1.
