Sebastian Stan Teases Possibility of Bucky Barnes as Captain America

In the comics, Bucky Barnes assumes the Captain America identity following the events of Civil War.

This article contains spoilers for the ending of Captain America: Civil War.

Steve Rogers might not have died (as many speculated he would, based on the comics) at the end of Captain America: Civil War, but that doesn’t mean his reign as Captain America might not soon come to an end…

After all, Chris Evans is rumored to only have one film left on his Marvel Cinematic Universe contract. Whether that’s the case or not, it’s not crazy to suspect that we might see a passing of the vibranium shield. And, if that is the case, Sebastian Stan is more than ready for the job.

At a Nerdist-hosted Captain Americamarathon in Los Angeles on Thursday, Stan was on hand to psych the crowd up, dropping some hints and/or dreams about what might be next for his character — and it sounded like he was confirming that Bucky will eventually become Captain America (as is the case in the comic books, following the events of the Civil War storyline).

After asking the crowd “Do you guys think I should be Captain America?,” Stan recounted his early meetings with the MCU Powers That Be, saying:

I was sitting there in a room with them and basically they were saying to me that this is what’s going to happen — [Bucky’s] going to become the Winter Soldier and then, eventually, he’s going to be Captain America…

Stan then backtracked a bit to make it more ambiguous:

I was like, ‘That sounds great,’ but they were never telling me at any point in time that that’s what they’re going to do — they still aren’t — so it was sort of, kind of overwhelming I guess.

This might not be official confirmation that the MCU is heading in the direction of making Bucky Barnes Captain America — after all, Sam Wilson also takes up the Captain America mantle in the comics and would make another good option for the MCU — but it certainly points in that direction.

Was Stan accidentally spilling insider knowledge of what will happen next in the MCU or was he just trying to get the crowd excited for what was an hours-long film marathon? We’ll have to wait and see. Bucky is back on ice by the end of Captain America: Civil War and Steve is still very much alive (though, notably, shield-less, after dropping the vibranium at Tony Stark’s feet). But, as we head futher into Phase 3, big changes are inevitably on their way…
