After months of speculation (not to mention the strange finality of the Iron Man 3 ending), Marvel has confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. Recently, Joss Whedon assured fans that he had every intention of bringing back Downey for the Iron Man role, and even more recently confirmed that he has just turned in the first draft of the Avengers 2 screenplay. It’s worth noting that this two picture deal is ONLY for Avengers films, and makes no mention of any potential Iron Man 4. Downey, who will be fifty when Avengers 2 hits theaters, had recently expressed some desire to branch out into other projects, and Tony Stark may be more appealing to him as a supporting role. Regardless, the success of the Marvel film franchise owes quite a debt to his smart, sarcastic portrayal of Tony Stark, so they were right to lock him up for at least two more turns in the armor.Avengers 2 goes into production next year and is scheduled for a May 1st, 2015 release.
