Following on the success of the animated Vixen series (which is headed for its second season), CW Seed will debut Freedom Fighters: The Ray in 2017 and produced by Warner Bros’ Blue Ribbon Content digital wing. The Ray has been a part of the DC Universe since 1973, and is historically associated with the Freedom Fighters, a team of superheroes from an alternate world where World War II continued on through the 21st century with the Axis gaining the upper hand.
The CW has been ahead of the curve with introducing openly gay or bisexual heroes, anti-heroes, and supporting characters on their live action superhero shows, none have been series leads. The Ray will change all that as the title character is a gay man.

Fans of the Vixen animated series will certainly recognize the animation style on display here. It’s modern, with hints of anime influences, although it doesn’t approach the lush, rendered feel you get from DC’s best recent animated offerings (Young Justice and Batman: The Brave and The Boldspring to mind, as well as some of their better animated features). The Ray himself is a really dynamic visual, and his light-based power set is perfect for animation.
Here’s the official word on The Ray:
Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.
Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (you may know them from all of the other great DC superhero shows on CW) will serve as executive producers.
