Chris Evans Initially Turned Down the Role of Captain America

Chris Evans explains what made him change his mind about taking on the iconic role of Captain America.

Captain America: The First Avenger

It’s hard to imagine a Marvel Cinematic Universe without Chris Evans as Captain America. He’s kind of perfect: Polite, but principled. Sensitive, but stubborn. He has that jawline. But a Chris Evan-less MCU is almost what we got. The actor went on Jimmy Kimmel last night to promote Captain America: Civil Warand explained why he almost didn’t take the part he has become most famous for portraying…

I was scared. Because, at first, it was a nine-picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry. Doing movies one at a time, if all of a sudden you decide you don’t want to do them anymore, you’re afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate. When you have a giant contract, if all of a sudden you’re not responding well, too bad, you gotta suit up again. That was scary.

Fair enough, Chris Evans. So what happened? The part kept “coming back his way,” and Evans eventually reconsidered by talking to his friends and family about why he didn’t want to do it. He realized that his reservations came from a place of fear, and Captain America would never approve of that.

It just started to make sense that I was saying no out of fear. You can’t be doing something because you’re scared. So it ended up kind of clicking to me in the way of looking at it as ‘whatever you’re scared of, push yourself into it.’

Speaking of Chris Evans acting choices, this seems like a good time to remind everyone of the fact that Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson once starred in a (pretty great) romantic comedy together. (I’m gonna be honest, it is always a good time to remind people that Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson once starred in a pretty great romantic comedy together.)

Here’s the full video of Evans explaining his reservations and eventual acceptance of the role, if you wanna take a look…
