Arrow Season 3 News: The Atom, Black Canary, and the DC TV Universe

Arrow season 3 will see the return of many fan favorite characters, but won't be part of the Justice League movie universe.

Brace yourselves, Arrow fans. We’ve got a mess of Arrow season three news, and some of it is quite spoiler-y. Now’s your chance to get out of here.

We’ll start with something non-spoiler, though. Episode 8 of Arrow and Episode 8 of The Flash (which will both air in…December?) will cross over with each other to tell one big, two-hour story. No other details yet, but that should be fun.

For starters, while discussing The Flash TV series, Geoff Johns pretty much confirmed (via a tweet from TV Guide) once and for all that The Flash and Arrow do not take place in the same universe as Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The reasoning here is that the TV writers have enough to worry about without having to fit in with the plans the movies are making. It’s quite sensible. Agents of SHIELD had to tread water for most of season one while waiting for Captain America: The Winter Soldier to show its hand. It’s for the best.

So, stop asking Stephen Amell if he’s playing Green Arrow in the Justice League movie, please. Also, sharp-eyed fans may notice that Ivy University (the home of Ray Palmer/The Atom, who is appearing on Arrow this year played by Brandon Routh) appears in the pilot for NBC’s Constantine. This doesn’t mean that these shows, which air on different networks have anything to do with each other. Arrow executive producer tamps that down in an interview with Green Arrow TV, saying that Arrow is “just in The Flash universe.” And vice versa, of course.

Speaking of Ray Palmer (who will be played by former Superman Brandon Routh), Kreisberg gave a little insight into his character and his potential relationship with Felicity, as well:

“A lot of what’s funny about Felicity and Oliver is that he’s so straight and she’s the funny one. With Brandon, you get somebody who’s as tall, square-jawed and handsome as he is [and] he’s a really funny comedian. He and Felicity can have that verbal repartee that we haven’t typically had on the show. As much as the show is getting darker, it’s gotten a lot funnier. It’s just such a different energy. He and Felicity are really cute together.”

And then there’s the matter of who will be the Black Canary this year. Is it Laurel? Well, “you can’t just put on a mask and go running around,” said Kreisberg. “You’ll get killed. Laurel is still just an attorney.” Although he promises that fans will be “very, very excited” by what’s in store for her this season.

Other revelations? Well, Arrow season 3 episode 2 is called “Sara.” Make of that what you will. But make no mistake, Caity Lotz “plays a big role in the new season.” That same episode is also going to bring back a character we haven’t seen in awhile. This is a major spoiler, so get out while you still can.

Episode 2 will see the return of…

Colin Donnel as Tommy Merlyn. Via flashback, of course. You can get the rest of those details (and more) in Mr. Kreisberg’s chat with TV Guide.
