Iron Man 2020 Puts Arno Stark in the Armor

Iron Man 2020 launches in January from Dan Slott, Christos Gage, and Pete Woods.

Iron Man 2020 From Marvel

Tony Stark: Iron Man has been hinting at two things for almost its entire run: something bad is going to happen to Tony, and the robots are coming for us. In 2020, Marvel is going to look at both outcomes with Iron Man 2020, the next step in the story Dan Slott has been telling with Tony since last year. Slott and Christos Gage (the incredible G.I. Joe: Cobra) are writing, with Pete Woods (Robin) on art duties.

The new series starts with Arno, Tony’s brother, in the armor. Conveniently enough, Arno is ALSO the Iron Man from 2020 who went back in time to 1984’s Machine Man #2. While there, he was mostly an amoral jerk, collecting bounties and generally smarming all over the place. He was, however, drawn by Herb Trimpe and Barry Windsor-Smith, so WOW is it good to look at.

The current iteration of Arno was created by Kieron Gillen and Dale Eaglesham. It’s fairly complicated, but he’s basically a super-genius who used his superior intellect to cure himself of the assorted genetic maladies he faced from Howard meddling while Arno was in the womb. Also Tony’s adopted. Spoilers.

He has been a supporting character to Tony in the current run, and he’s getting a significant boost in responsibilities with the new series. “Like the inexorable turning of pages on a calendar, we’ve been building up to the arrival of 2020 and the advent of Arno Stark as Iron Man ever since this latest run began,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort of Iron Man 2020. “Here, all of the larger themes we’ve been playing with will come to the fore in a big, sweeping, epic action movie that anyone can enjoy!”

The new series promises to tackle issues around artificial intelligence and the rights of robot peoples. Vision, Jocasta and others are expected to play a role. It doesn’t sound like Arno is going to be the suave jerk he is in Machine Man, but the solicitation text doesn’t sound like he’s going to be especially friendly, either. Here, take a look.

IT’S A NEW IRON MAN FOR A NEW YEAR! The future is now! Artificial Intelligences present a clear and present danger to humanity and must be brought to heel! The Robot Rebellion battles for the establishment of robot rights! And Arno Stark IS Iron Man!

Honestly, between this solicit and how rotten everyone is to Karima Shapandar over in House of X and Powers of X, I’m starting to wonder if somebody didn’t reprogram the Marvel office roomba to yell anti-human slurs at the editorial staff. Unless maybe the big bad of Iron Man 2020 is going to be the Facebook trending algorithm…
