The BBC’s two-part radio drama adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardustis now officially available to listen to, but you better get a move on. Part 1 of the Stardustradio drama expires in 13 days (January 23), with Part 2 expiring in 14 days (January 24).
One area of content in which the U.K. seems to easily outstrip America is the radio drama. We’re not even in the mainstream radio drama game, and that’s a shame because it is a form that allows some imaginative stories to be retold in new ways.
This Christmas, the BBC will be putting some of its publicly-collected money behind a radio drama adaption of Neil Gaiman’s fairy tale novel Stardust. Check out the tweet on the subject…— BBC Radio 4 (@BBCRadio4) September 26, 2016
The BBC previously adapted Gaiman’s Neverwhereinto a radio drama in 2013 with a ridiculously star-studded cast that included James McAvoy, Natalie Dormier, David Harewood, Sophie Okonedo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Head, Christopher Lee, and Romola Garai. As part of the upcoming radio drama season, will also be developing How The Marquis Got His Coat Back, one of Gaiman’s short stories, set in the Neverwhereuniverse.
The Stardust radio drama will star Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) as Tristran and Sophie Rundle (Happy Valley) as Yvaine. Other cast members include: Charlotte Riley, Frances Barber, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Kevin Eldon, Paul Kaye, Aisling Loftus, Blake Ritson, Eleanor Bron, Maggie Steed, Alex McQueen, and Nicholas Boulton.
Presumably, the radio drama will follow the plot of the novel rather than the severely underrated film adaptation, which was slightly different. Here’s the official synopsis for the radio drama:
Challenged to retrieve a fallen star, Tristran Thorn leaves the sleepy English village of Wall and crosses into the land of Fairie and the realm of Stormhold. Locating the star he discovers it is no meteorite, but a young woman, Yvaine. When Yvaine evades him and escapes Tristran discovers he is not the only one in pursuit of the star: there are dark forces in this magical land and he must find Yvaine before she falls into their clutches. As he does so Tristran will uncover the secret to his own identity and a fate beyond his wildest dreams.
