Fans of Philip Pullman’s extraordinary His Dark Materials trilogy have waited a long time for this news: The Book Of Dust is finally on its way. The first volume will be published on the 19th of October and is available for pre-order now.
Set in the same world as the original trilogy, The Book Of Dust will comprise three new novels spanning a period of roughly ten years before Northern Lights, Pullman’s first Lyra Belacqua book, until roughly ten years after The Amber Spyglass, the last of the trio.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Pullman describes the new volumes as neither prequel nor sequel but instead, ‘equel’, running concurrently to the events of His Dark Materials. At the center of the trilogy, says Pullman, is:
“…the struggle between a despotic and totalitarian organisation, which wants to stifle speculation and inquiry, and those who believe thought and speech should be free.”
Yet more good news for fans of Pullman’s probing religious fantasy universe is the forthcoming television adaptation, about which you can read more here.
