David Duchovny: 5 Memorable Roles
Simon Brew
As the new X-Files movie hovers into view, we take a look at the most memorable screen performances of its lead actor...

In celebration of the upcoming X-Files: I Want To Believe, we've dug into the back catalogue of Mr Duchovny to pick his roles to cherish…
FOX MULDER
The X-Files
An obvious, but entirely correct inclusion. While he didn’t see through the entirety of the television run of the show, he’s as intrinsically linked with the series as Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter, and his portrayal of Fox Mulder at one point had him as one of the most famous men on the planet. Bonus points too for voicing Mulder in the classic Simpsons two-parter, The Springfield Files (he popped up too in the spin-off series, The Lone Gunmen). Ironically, his most popular role is away from the genre where he's otherwised excelled, namely comedy.
HANK MOODY
Californication
Harking back to the earlier days in his career when he did The Red Shoes Diaries (which we're coming to shortly), Californication is chock-full of humping, yet also manages to give Duchnovny his most memorable TV role since The X-Files left our screens. Chucking out sharp dialogue and occasionally putting some clothes on, it’s a bit of a bumpy show about a troubled writer (we can relate), but powered by a terrific cast. Season two is on its way.
DR IRA KANE
Evolution
A criminally underrated big screen comedy from Ivan Reitman, Evolution again shows Duchovny’s comedy skills off well, and in Orlando Jones he’s joined by another underappreciated bona fide comedy talent. Absolutely definitely worth rediscovering: it's not a classic, but there are several laugh out loud moments...
JAKE WINTERS
Red Shoe Diaries
Kudos to Mr Duchovny for never trying to downplay his involvement in Zalman King’s enduringly popular softcore TV series. And while, as Jake Winters, he was never in, ahem, ‘the thick of the action’, it’s a show he was working on for a good few years after the first X-Files was shown…
BRIAN KESSLER
Kalifornia
It’s a troubled film, granted, but the 1993 Brad Pitt/Juliette Lewis starrer also squeezed in a meaty role for a younger Duchovny, who at this point was just on the cusp of taking on the X-Files. He plays a man researching serial killers, who soon finds out all he needs to know about them. Worth checking out.
And don’t forget, as an added bonus...
TESS’S BIRTHDAY PARTY FRIEND
Working Girl
Well, we had to throw one of these in. Blink and you miss him in Mike Nichol’s fun 80s rom-com. Gawd bless him…
The X-Files: I Want To Believe is out in UK cinemas from 1st August 2008.
