He's in the Lone Ranger this summer, but NEXT year he'll be playing the iconic villain as part of the new big-screen incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

William Fichtner's role in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has been confirmed by the actor himself! Just as the internet suspected, he's playing Ninja Turtles nemesis, The Shredder! In an interview with the Huffington Post, Fichtner said,  "I play Shredder. It is cool. It's one of those things that came along where I thought, Really? Let me think about this for a minute. [Laughs] Then I was like, Yeah, OK, this sounds like a journey. I'm very glad that it worked out, I'm really glad that I'm doing it."

While Fichtner is certainly a gifted actor, his casting is sure to raise some eyebrows among fans. In the comics (and most media incarnations of the franchise), Shredder is Oroku Saki, a Japanese man. The casting of the American-born Fichtner likely means that the character on screen will be a fairly hefty deviation from established Ninja Turtle mythology. Of course, fan controversy has haunted this movie almost from the moment it was announced, so this latest bit of news is no different.

Fichtner joins a cast that includes Megan Fox as April O'Neil, Danny Woodburn as Splinter, as well as Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, and Alan Ritchson as the Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and is scheduled for release on June 6, 2014.
