With Deadpool 2 now all but confirmed to be happening, one of the biggest questions concerning the sequel will be whether Cable – the powerful mutant who was Deadpool’s partner for 50 issues of their own popular series back in the 2000s – will make an appearance in Wade Wilson’s next big screen adventure.
Deadpool co-screenwriter Rhett Reese, speaking with Den of Geek just yesterday, acknowledged that Cable is coming: "Clearly Cable is not a character that's going to stay out of the Deadpool universe for too much longer. He's a character that everyone loves. Whether he's in (Deadpool 2), whether he's in an X-Force thing, that still remains to be determined."
No doubt once Deadpool comes out this weekend and does the terrific box office it looks like it’s going to do (the movie is tracking for anywhere from $60 to $80 million in its opening frame), Fox’s future plans for the Merc with a Mouth – as well as related properties like X-Force – will start to fall into place along with Cable’s role in them. There’s also the issue of him being the son of X-Men’s Cyclops and Jean Grey’s clone Madelyne Pryor, which would take some ‘splainin’ in the cinematic X-Men universe as it’s currently configured.
But one way or the other, Cable will probably get to the screen, and Reese even admitted that he and writing partner Paul Wernick have an actor in mind: "We are thinking about a person a little bit, but it's more of an archetype rather than writing to that particular actor's cadence and things like that, and we're just not allowed to say who it is yet."
We’ve got a lot more with Reese and Wernick a little later this week. Deadpool arrives in theaters on Friday (February 12).
