Why Joss Whedon Left the Batgirl Movie

Joss Whedon on his "heartbreaking" departure from Warner Bros' Batgirl movie...

DC scored itself something of a coup when Joss Whedon signed on the dotted line to write and direct a planned Batgirl movie. But it’d be fair to say a lot has happened over the past 12 months, with Whedon’s personal life and contribution to Justice League reshoots both making headlines.

Whedon ultimately departed the Batgirl movie, and on the red carpet for Avengers: Infinity War, he explained why.

“It had been a year since I first pitched the story and a lot happened in that year,” he admitted. “I felt some of the elements might not work as well, and the story kind of just crumbled in my hands”.

He added that “there were elements I hadn’t mastered and after a long time felt like I wasn’t going to. So, I told people I didn’t have an idea, which isn’t the exact truth. I had an idea that didn’t fit in the space that was left for it. It was a little heart-breaking because I was so excited about it”.

Batgirl is still an active project, though, with Christina Hodson now writing the script.

There’s no release date set for the Batgirl movie at the moment, but the full schedule of upcoming DC superhero movies can be found here.
