It's been 25 years since Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut on the Sega Genesis in 1991. This a pretty big deal for those gamers - like myself - who grew up with the Blue Blur, and Sega plans to celebrate the anniversary all year.
First off, released on Twitter by Sega, is Sonic's new 25th anniversary logo, which you can spot at the top of this article. It's quite appropriately retro - a big callback to Sonic's very first adventure so many years ago.
This next bit is quite interesting, as well, if we're to believe Johnny Gioeli, lead singer of the band Crush 40, and his words on Facebook. According to him, there's a new anniversary Sonic game coming out in 2016.
Although the status was quickly pulled from Gioeli's Facebook page, here's what he said:
"We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic," Gioeli wrote. "We might participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game... stay tuned..."
There's no official confirmation from Sega at this time, but it's pretty reasonable to assume that the company, which has never been shy of pushing yearly installments of Sonic, will be putting out something new in 2016. Hopefully, it's a bit better than what they've done with Sonic Boom recently.
Let me remind everyone that there's also a new Sonic Boom game for the 3DS due out in 2016 called Fire & Ice. I kind of doubt that's the anniversary game, though...
More on this as we learn it!
