17 Great Star Wars LEGO Sets

The Star Wars galaxy may be far, far away, but you can build your own version with these awesome LEGO sets.

This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.

Star Wars and LEGO are a partnership made in heaven. George Lucas’ much beloved galaxy doesn’t seem so far, far away when you can build it in miniature and knock it down repeatedly within the comforts of your Earthly home.

Many a fan coveted a Death Star LEGO set in his or her youth, or a Millennium Falcon one, and many used the pieces from each to build their own Star Wars adventures..

Now that we’re allegedly all “grown ups,” you might want to buy a LEGO Star Wars set for a little person in your life, or—if you’re anything like me—you might fancy buying one for yourself.

Whatever your motivations, here are seventeen of the best!

1. Ultimate Star Destroyer

One of the first things we ever saw in Star Wars was the intimidating outline of an Imperial Star Destroyer closing in on the daring rebels with the Death Star plans tentatively in their grasp. After the now-iconic opening crawl set the scene so wonderfully, this startling image was the perfect way to start the Star Wars saga.

These triangular transports have been eponymous with evil ever since. Getting your hands on this classic LEGO Star Destroyer isn’t easy. It’s a true collector’s item, and even on Amazon the price is high. But just look at it; isn’t this 3000 piece set a true stunner?

2. Sandcrawler

A cheaper option (cheap being a very relative term here) is this gorgeous Sandcrawler kit, which also harks back to the original Star Wars cinema event that the world now knows as A New Hope. With over 3000 small pieces and loads of minifigures, and even movable hatches and cranes, this one’s a truly sumptuous set.

Fans will be particularly happy to see Uncle Owen getting some LEGO representation here. The ill-fated adoptive father of Luke doesn’t appear in many sets, which makes sense considering what happened to him in the days following the Sandcrawler’s visit to his house. Pay tribute to the man by ordering this set today… if you like.

3. Encounter on Jakku

If you’re looking to buy for younger kids, or simply don’t have the attention span to piece together thousands of bricks, a smaller kit like this The Force Awakens one would do the trick nicely. (The price tag is much more reasonable too.) Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Simon Pegg’s Unkar Plutt do battle in this “Encounter on Jakku” set, with the adorable ball of joy BB-8 thrown in as well.

The character riding the big blue beasty is named Teedo, providing a bit of obscure character credibility to proceedings. It’s always good to have few figures of characters nobody even remembers in your collection, just to make you look ever cooler when people are nosing around.

4. Motorized AT-AT

Look! It actually walks! This motorized AT-AT set, which harks back to the iconic ice battle on Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back, is this writer’s personal favorite option on this list. Little Luke Skywalker carrying his dad’s blue lightsaber is the icing on the cake in this—truly one of the coolest creations LEGO has ever dreamed up.

The batteries aren’t included, but if you’re willing to spend hundreds of dollars on LEGO, you can probably afford a few Duracells on top of that. It takes six of them to power the walking motion. The set contains over a thousand pieces. Make no mistake, this one’s for the hardcore.

5. Death Star Interior

If you’ve ever wanted to see how all the Death Star’s innards fit together, this is the LEGO set for you. Although it’s probably not canon (um, there are no doors between the rooms), this dollhouse-esque look at the Death Star’s insides is impressively imaginative, even by LEGO standards.

Boasting 3,800 pieces and 24 minifigures (including Emperor Palpatine!), this technological terror would improve any collection. It measures up at 16 inches tall and 16 1/2 inches wide. The power to destroy a planet may be insignificant next to the power of the Force, but a LEGO Death Star of this size is still pretty cool.

6. Imperial Shuttle Tydirium

If your pockets aren’t as deep as the Empire’s, and resultantly you can’t stretch to the cost of a Death Star, you might consider adding this Imperial Shuttle to your fleet instead. It’s sleek, under a thousand pieces, and has flaps that open and wings that move.

It also contains minifigures of Chewbacca, Princess Leia and Han Solo. And as an added bonus, you even get a little LEGO cookie. Yep, this set is from Return Of The Jedi, and although Wicket W. Warrick is nowhere to be seen, there is some Ewok grub included in this kit. Yum! (Warning: Please don’t eat the LEGO cookie.)

7. First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter

One of the cheapest options on this list, but still very cool, this First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter lets you take one of The Force Awakens coolest designs home with you. You might already have a LEGO TIE Fighter, but does it had a red bit? I doubt it.

Also included in this kit are two black-suited Stormtroopers, one Imperial officer and an Empire employee with a very un-ergonomic helmet. There’s no Finn, though. But the back hatch of the TIE fighter does open, so if you’ve got him already you can plonk Finn in there and re-enact his escape from Starkiller Base.

8. Tantive IV

If recreating the opening scene of Star Wars is something you’d like to do, you’ll need this Tantive IV as well as the aforementioned Star Destroyer. Remaining one of the most recognizable designs in the Star Wars canon, this is the ship that Leia and co. transported the Death Star plans in before ejecting them in the general direction of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Tantive IV was back at the forefront of Star Wars last year, with its inclusion in Rogue One tying the whole saga together very nicely. This LEGO set version consists of 1,400 pieces and includes minifigures of Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Captain Antilles, and one generic rebel. You’ll have to provide your own Darth Vader to re-enact his iconic entrance from A New Hope.

9. B-Wing

The B-Wing has been part of the Star Wars canon for ages, but it’s had a bit of a resurgence recently thanks to Star Wars Rebels, which gave it a special origins episode not long ago. This 448 piece set lets you build the memorable Rebel vessel for yourself, and it’s not that expensive either.

As well as the ship, which has foldable wings, you get three rather obscure minifigures with this one: Ten Numb, Gray Squadron Pilot, and General Airen Cracken. If you’re working on a Rebel fleet collection, this is a vital ship to include. And it’ll look cool on your shelf.

10. R2-D2

It may cost over $600, but boy oh boy, this LEGO Creator R2-D2 kit is freaking gorgeous. Consisted of 2,127 pieces and measuring up at 12 inches tall, this is the closest thing you can get to your own droid sidekick. Unless you’re a robotics expert, I guess.

This item was retired from production in 2014, so it might be tricky to get your hands on one. It’s a collector’s item, of course, and I’m utterly envious of anyone that owns one. R2-D2 might be an overweight glob of grease, but surely every fan would love one of these in their collection.

11. Slave I

For many, the Slave I is the coolest ship that the Star Wars universe has ever shown us. At the very least, it’s a close second to the Millennium Falcon. This LEGO edition of the Slave I is based on Jango Fett’s prequel version, and it’s surprisingly simple to build at just 360 pieces.

As you’d expect, you get a Jango Fett figure included. There’s also a young Boba Fett in the set, too. For extra fun, pop Jango’s head off and replay that sombre moment between son and decapitated dad head from Attack Of The Clones.

12. K-2SO

There are plenty of Rogue One sets on the market as well, with Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spinoff providing lots of opportunities for cool brick-based designs. The best of these is the buildable K-2SO figure, which lets you piece together Alan Tudyk’s sarcastic formerly-Imperial droid from 169 tiny parts.

This K-2 is 5.5 inches tall, and yours for under $35 before tax. It’s even offered with free shippig! What more could we want?

13. Poe’s X-Wing Fighter

This The Force Awakens kit, which recreates Poe Dameron’s snazzy black and orange X-Wing from the film, presents another opportunity to pick up the adorably simple minifig of BB-8. You also get Poe himself (who wouldn’t want a mini Oscar Isaac?) and two nameless generic Resistance characters.

The set costs less than $90 before tax and is available for Prime delivery. It consists of 717 pieces, presenting a nice little challenge without being so complicated it’ll consume your whole life. If you’ve always wanted a LEGO X-Wing, this is probably the one to get.

14. General Grievous

Get ready to deliver dodgy impressions of the line “I have been trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku” from Revenge Of The Sith with this lovely buildable figurine of the coughing Jedi-killer, General Grievous. It’s yours for under $45 before tax with Amazon Prime.

He’s 10.31 inches tall and made of 186 pieces. His limbs are fully posable. Sadly, he doesn’t have a cape, and you can’t pull open his chest cavity to reveal his heart. Shame.

15. Jabba’s Barge

One that I’ve been eying up for years now: The Jabba’s Sail Barge set from Return Of The Jedi, which measures 18 inches long, consists of 781 pieces, and features minifigures of Jabba, Luke with the green lightsaber, a recently-defrosted Han, Lando in disguise, Leia in the gold bikini, a Gamorrean guard, R2-D2 with a little serving tray, and a soon-to-die Boba Fett. There’s even a little Sarlacc pit to build.

Sadly, this one isn’t widely circulated anymore, so you’ll be forking out upwards of $430 if you want to add it to your collection. Look at it, though—it’s a thing of beauty!

16. Death Star II

Speaking of brilliant sets that cost way more now than they did at the time, this Return Of The Jedi-homaging Death Star II kit (which first hit shelves in 2005) is the epitome of LEGO inflation.

This set—which must be tricky to get to grips with, considering the aim is to build something that looks half-finished—has a starting price of $1000 before tax and shipping at the moment from third party sellers on Amazon. It also has a stand so you can display it proudly around your house. It’s probably a pipedream for most fans, except the lucky ones that bought it in 2005.

17. The Millennium Falcon

There have been many Millennium Falcon LEGO sets over the years, some of which now fetch similar prices to the Death Star II set above.

Luckily for fans who aren’t rolling in disposable income, the release of The Force Awakens saw a new version hitting shelves. You can get it on Amazon from a third party seller, at the time of writing, for under $130 before tax.

On top of allowing you to live the dream of building your own Falcon, this kit will also add six minifigures to your collection: Rey, Finn, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Tasu Leech, a Kanjiklub gang member, and BB-8. It requires 1330 bricks to build the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.
