Star Trek Beyond: Sulu is Star Trek's first openly gay character

It's been revealed that there's a small scene in Star Trek Beyond where Sulu – played by John Cho in the film – is very briefly seen with a same-sex partner and their daughter.

It’s a very small and understated moment, but one not without significance: Sulu thus becomes the first openly gay character in the Star Trek series, in its 50th birthday year.

The idea reportedly came from co-writer Simon Pegg, and as Cho told the Herald Sun, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out [of] it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations”.

As such, it’s a brief, non-demonstrative sequence in the film. And the movie quickly moves on.
