DC Super Pets Movie Release Date and Everything You Need to Know
Who's a good boy? Who is a very good boy? There's a Super Pets movie coming. Krypto is ready for his close up.
Finally, someone is going to put Krypto in a movie. No, I mean it, I actually think this is a fantastic idea. Last year, Collider first broke the news that Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie) is writing an animated DC Super Pets movie for Warner Bros. Now THR has word that Stern will also direct, alongside Sam Levine, and that the movie will open on May 22, 2022.
You see, Krypto is a very good boy. Wait, sorry. I just love dogs, and I’ve been waiting for someone to put Krypto in the spotlight. The Krypto The Superdog animated series than ran from 2005-2006 didn’t really catch on, although he has fared better in appearances elsewhere, notably an episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and as a recurring character on Young Justice (where he was simply known as Wolf, but c’mon, we know the score).
The whole Super Pets concept stems from a Legion of Super-Heroes story in 1962’s Adventure Comics #263, which saw Krypto team up with Beppo the Super-Monkey (don’t ask), Streaky the Supercat (imagine cleaning that litter box), Comet the Super-Horse (for real, do not ask unless you want to doubt your own sanity, in which case, do read his origin story…which I am not recounting here), and Proty, a noble ball of shapeshifting protoplasm. They joined together to help Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes defeat, I shit you not, the Brain Globes of Rambat, in a story that I will cherish until the day I die. Silver Age DC Comics are the best.
I can’t imagine that there’s any version of this movie that doesn’t jettison some of the extraneous super-animals in favor of Ace the Bat-Hound and his jaunty mask. If you ever need a solid, cleansing cry, go read “Good Boy” (available to read for free right here), Tom King and David Finch’s Eisner Award winning short story which updated Ace for the 21st century.
