New crime drama green-lit from Breaking Bad creator
Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan's long-gestating project Battle Creek has received a straight-to-series order...
Like the publishing houses that turned down the first Harry Potter novel, there must be no small number of selves being kicked at the networks that didn't take a punt on Breaking Bad when it first did the rounds.
CBS, one such network, is taking no risks this time around, having given Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's long-gestating crime drama Battle Creek a straight-to-series order.
Gilligan's detective show was first developed and then shelved over a decade ago by CBS, but it's being dusted off for an expected debut in the 2014-2015 season.
Were this anyone but Vince Gilligan, the synopsis for Battle Creek, which revolves around "two detectives who possess very different world views, but are teamed up to work alongside one another" might have us groaning into our mid-morning coffees, but what comes out of Gilligan's head has more than proven itself worthy of our time.
"Together," continues the official blurb, "they must answer the question: is cynicism, guile and deception enough to clean up the semi-mean streets of Battle Creek Michigan in the face of a lack of resources, or will naivete and trust get the job done?”.
Gilligan is expected to serve as writer and executive producer with House creator David Shore showrunning.
