With Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in the lead roles, and Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre's Cary Fukunaga directing, HBO drama True Detective's ingredients are recommendation enough to put this on your 'to watch' list, before we even come to the rapturous reviews early episodes have garnered from US critics.

Set in South Louisiana, it's the tale of two detectives, Martin Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey) investigating an extraordinary murder in 1995, spliced with 2012 interviews revisiting their work on the case. Expect the reliability of memory and the relativity of truth to play key roles.

If all goes to plan, True Detective, which starts on HBO on Sunday the 12th of January, will continue as an anthology series, each season telling a different story with a different cast of characters. Watch the latest trailer below:
