The CW plans to delve further into the story of The Vampire Diaries' Originals, with a new spin-off feat. Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin...

The Secret Circle may have only lasted one season, but that doesn’t mean that The CW has given up on expanding their Vampire Diaries franchise. A new spin-off idea, currently being referred to as ‘The Originals’, is in the works, with an episode being written for The Vampire Diaries' fourth season that could act as the new show’s pilot.

The series will follow the Original family, which has been a part of its parent show since the second season, and will feature Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and newcomer Phoebe Tonkin in lead roles. There’s no word on whether siblings Elijah or Rebekah will be involved, but we’ll see Klaus return to New Orleans, “a town he helped built centuries ago”, and reunite with former protégé, Marcel.

We don’t yet know who will survive the current season of The Vampire Diaries, but it’s entirely possible more of the current cast could follow Morgan and Tonkin. And what does this mean for Klaus if the episode doesn’t go down well? Are his days in Mystic Falls numbered no matter what?

The Vampire Diaries’ executive producer Julie Plec will write the episode and will be steering the spin-off should it prove popular with audiences. The CW has been desperate to court the kind of rabid fanbase and critical attention that TVD gives them, but will The Originals be the Angel to its Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
