Agent Coulson will headline Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

Clark Gregg and Joss Whedon appeared at New York Comic-Con this weekend to confirm some fan-pleasing news…

“There was never going to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. show without Agent Phil Coulson.” And with those words from the mouth of Kevin Feige, hordes of Marvel fans at the New York Comic-Con and around the world breathed a sigh of relief. Agent Coulson would be appearing in Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. (the show’s current title), and Clark Gregg was there to prove it.

The news was announced with some trickery. Ostensibly, Gregg was at the Comic-Con to discuss his role on the animated Ultimate Spider-Man but during the panel, a video was shown of Whedon and Marvel head Kevin Feige discussing Agent Coulson’s role in Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. “He’s headlining the show and always was”, confirmed Whedon.

The Avengers viewers will know that Coulson’s appearance begs more questions than it answers at this stage, but however Whedon and co. are going to play it, let’s rest happy that for however long, in whatever circumstances, Coulson is back where he belongs.

Coulson Lives!

yes yes yes!

Thank. GOD! Whedon is a genius! Well done for keeping the fans happy :-D

Reviving Coulson is a copout, especially if they do it via a LMD. I hope this is only in flashbacks and/or the series is set during the build up to The Avengers. The first series/pilot could then end with his death & the Avengers battle. It could then carry on with the aftermath in future episodes.

Also, don't Agents Sitwell & Blake confirm the death of Coulson in dialogue during 'Item 47'?

Very happy about this and will accept whatever reason they give, including 'A wizard did it'.

I'll be honest. I'm a bit 'Avengered' out.

To everyone saying that this is a cop-out... I just watched Avengers this morning... We never see Coulson die on screen. We see him slip out of consciousness and the camera pans to Fury who calls for medics, who we see run to the area of the screen where Phil lies, with resuscitation equipment charged and ready.

Who's to say Fury didn't lie to bring the Avengers together...?

He is dead:

“We all love Clark Gregg, there's no doubt about
that,” Whedon said. “From before we made 'The
Avengers,' we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part
of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his
death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now
that I'm really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic
integrity, which means we don't stretch the bounds of reality.”

Lesson one for sci-fi fans: Show runners and writers lie to the public to keep spoilers hidden.

So Joss is in fact not wanting to "keep a type of artistic
integrity" and will be "stretching the bounds of reality”after all?

Also, Agents Sitwell & Blake confirm the death of Coulson in dialogue during 'Item 47'.

I'm not going to be drawn into an argument over this so I refer you to my previous statement which answers all of your questions.

Do we have a Life Model Decoy in the mix?

no one ever dies in comic book anymore. ever.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Vision. Colson is going to become an Android, and that'll tie in the Ant Man movie (kind of).

When has something as trivial and dying ever stopped anyone in Marvel before?

Nick Fury is a tricky S.O.B. I could well imagine he pretended Coulson was dead to get the Avengers together and let the world think he was dead so Coulson could head off and do some undercover work for S.H.I.E.L.D. which may well be where the TV show begins.
To me that doesnt spoil the Avengers it makes the sequel more exciting, who knows what will happen when the Avengers realise that they were manipulated by Fury after all they clearly already had issued with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the way it did things in that movie. This opens up all kinds of possibilities for the future.

Flashbacks would be my best guess to this one.

Quit your whining Fanboys, Maybe there not bringing him back from the dead, there's always the possability the show could be set before the events of the Avengers! But in a world of Norse Gods, Super Soldiers and Radio-active monsters I dont think someone coming back from the dead would be the strangest of things... Either way I have faith Joss Whedon will deliver a fantastic story.

This is not the first time I have heard the life model decoy theory mentioned in relation to Coulson's 'death'. The suggestion was that the Coulson in The Avengers was LMD and the real one was the agent that Fury mentioned he had sent to protect Jane Foster.

I think the idea of it being set before the Avengers is unlikely because the events in "Item 47" strongly suggest the series is to be set after TA.

But as you say - Comic book characters rarely die for very long and Whedon can be trusted to give us a good explanation.

Perhaps he'll be a hologram, like Rimmer!

Hell yes.

As if Fury couldn't lie to the rest of SHIELD too?

Clearly Coulson is a cyborg.

I'm glad he's going to be apart of the Shield TV series, I think it will be interesting to see his character expanded since his slate is much cleaner than the characters who have been appearing in comics since the 60s.

So soon?

Which is all exactly why they can't just say "Oh, he's come back alive" or "Oh, he was a robot replica".
Because of the potentially silly content of this universe they have to ground it in reality - even the magic of Thor is explained as technology we can't understand.

People have been too quick to say 'Coulson Lives' when The Avengers, Item 47, and even the quote from Joss says he is dead...

Hopefully he will headline the pilot which will be set around the same time as 'The Avengers', introduce the new team of characters, end with Coulson's death and have the new team carrying on in future episodes...

Well, he lied about the trading cards. They were in Coulson's locker, not his pocket.

Actually, Sitwell and Blake don't confirm his death. One just says, "I miss him too." That could be a simple reassignment.

Now we know he's coming back I hope that he isn't dead and Fury lied to the Avengers (as well as Joss lying to us in interviews). This could build on the mistrust that was developing between Fury and the group.
Any LMD type solution will be a disaster.

I have a bad feeling that this is pandering to the fans by bringing him back...
