Descriptions of five key characters planned for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot have arrived online…

This story contains potential spoilers for S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC’s forthcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, currently being created by one Mr Joss Whedon, has whipped fandom up into what’s known in medical circles as a right old state. In short: we're excited

Since the news arrived that a pilot episode was on its way, little has been known about the in-development show; until now that is. Below, courtesy of TV Line, are the casting descriptions for five S.H.I.E.L.D. characters:

SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy  skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

So now that’s out there, who'd like to join us in playing a round or two of the casting speculation game?

is it bad that i immediately went "Fillion for Grant, Summer for Rice, Kaylee and Simon for Fitz and Simmonds, and Zoe for the other one"? (It could happen! Nathan's doing Castle I know but their myth-arc is nearly done, so he could be free, Jewel and Maher haven't done any major TV work since Firefly in starring roles so they're probably free, and Zoe's on Suits, I know, but hey, it's a law firm, she can quit!)

So, it's just the same type of characters he always writes then. No doubt they'll all speak in the same wise-cracky way with no real individual voice.

I had the same thought when I read it!

I can see Jewel in this for sure hopefully as Skye. Possibly Alan Tudyk too as Grant although it sounds like Baldwin through and through. Maybe Fran Kranz as Fitz though.

What are the odds one of these will be revealed to be an LMD?

I think that's a fair assessment to a degree but it's up to the actors to turn that dialogue into a real character and I'd much rather they did it with Whedon's voice than the typical shorthand most US TV hacks write in.

I'm sure that to begin with those who follow Whedon will notice the similarities but as time goes on and the writers and cast get to know each other better they will begin to find the uniqueness to separate it out from his other shows.

Hells, yeah! Maybe they could have a flying headquarters designed to look like a beat up old cargo plane?

Hmm, and I think brown is this seasons colour.

Fran Kranz for leo fitz.

Adam Baldwin as Grant Ward?

What a load of bollocks - have you not seen Buffy or Firefly??

Alan Tudyk is in Suburgatory but he doesn't play a major character so he might be open to working with Joss Whedon.

I'd disagree with your opinion there. While Whedon's voice is certainly a signature of his writing, I've always thought that he gave each character a very distinct voice of their own. Someone like Steven Moffat, on the other hand, doesn't do this for me and I always feels he's just having a conversation with himself. Whedon is distinctive in his writier, but not intrusive, in my opinion.

As much as I love the usual crew, I'm hoping for some new faces (the rest can pop in and out as extras!) Whedon is good at finding new people anyways. Although someone said Penikett for Grant Ward and now its stuck in my head!! One request from the C.S.A.s, please can we have a plain looking actor or actress? Not a (thick rimmed glasses still looks like a god type) but a genuinely 'normal' looking person. I would love to see someone like me on TV in a major role!

Seriously, if Baldwin doesn't get cast as Grant Ward, I will eat my hat.

Jon Bernthal for Grant

Save Shield!

That's a natural pick. Make it so.

Please not Summer Kiss-of-death Glau. I love her on screen, but she has pretty much cursed everything she's been in.

Agent Althea Rice IS Zoe !
