Joss Whedon’s Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D pilot announced
That Joss Whedon Avengers-themed Marvel TV show? It’s officially called S.H.I.E.L.D, and it’s just gone into production…
Since the announcement arrived that Joss Whedon was working on an ABC TV pilot set in The Avengers universe, the speculation came thick and fast. Was Whedon planning on collaborating with Guillermo del Toro on the mooted Hulk series? Would he be bringing lesser-known Marvel characters to the small screen?
No, and almost certainly come our answers today, with the news that Whedon’s Marvel series officially goes by the name of S.H.I.E.L.D and is based on workings of the Marvel universe's peacekeeping organisation (known as the Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, depending on your source).
Whedon is set to write S.H.I.E.L.D with long-time Dollhouse and Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog collaborators Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. He’ll also direct the pilot (which has already gone into production) schedule permitting. That all sounds like rather good news wouldn't you say?

Nice!

Is it too soon to start the campaign to stop the cancellation?
This ain't Fox, thank god.
And can we get some more Katee Sackhoff please???
Shiny! :-)
If we can't have Nathan Fillion ("Castle" is still doing well in the ratings), how about Alan Tudyk, Ron Glass, and Adam Baldwin? None of them are in series now.
I was right on the money. SHEILD would be cheap to produce and to Joe Public a clean slate to work on as only Fury is really known.
It sounds interesting and I like that Joss is back on TV but it's a real shame they won't be able to get the big names of SHIED like Nick Fury and Black Widow - unless they're recast, which is unlikely or they appear in cameo roles from time to time.
Alan Tudyk is doing "Suburgatory". I'm sure one can expect some Whedon regulars to pop-up in the new show.
Maybe this'll all be Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. Wouldn't mind seeing Spiderwoman here as well.
I reckon they'll use Cobie Smulders a fair amount, then have Samuel L Jackson pop in at big moments- opening, finale, etc.
I was hoping for exactly this! My money is on Maximiliano Hernández's agent Sitwell being the leader, with Maria Hill playing a big part, and the odd rare Nick Fury / A list marvel actors cameoing on occasion.
There's a wealth of characters that the show could use. Presumably it will follow the Ultimate model so expect them to recruit a few powered or gadget heroes to the team roster whilst recruiting some youngsters in training (Avengers Academy?) and look to start off with a power of the week with some overall big bad (HYDRA? AIM?), maybe Arnim Zola will resurface as Toby Jones flits between movies and TV quite regularly.
This is exactly the right show for marvel to put on TV to kickoff with. Coming off the back of the Avengers summer success this will no doubt give Joss a very good base to start off with and who will hopefully stick with it once they realise that the movie wasn't a fluke.
Whedon must be the busiest guy around- shame from recent news that he was unable to provide commentary for The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray release. Still want to see his work on Much Ado About Nothing.
I might actually watch TV again for this. I'm SO excited.
I look like they are really want to get this started as soon as possible. I only hope that when the show gets on the road, it will be shown internationally. Where I live they have the most annoying habit of screening it a year later or in short bursts of episodes, where you have to wait months.
Bring back all the cast of Firefly for this one... and Eliza Dushku. Nom.
Do we know which network this will be on yet?
Well, this seems cancel-proof
...fairly sure I just came a little...
Not too early, just prudent. I'd buy stamps now...
shhhhhht don't jinx it!
He actually did. Annoyingly it seems that the shop you buy it in decides whether or not you get it or some 90 minute doc.
erugh- I have no idea whether to wait and see if there's some sort of special edition for the film, coming out later than expected next year- with the provided commentary
I forgot about Cobie Smulders but I think she's still doing that show 'How I met your Mother.' But yeah, I think it could be a really fun show.
I do like Toby Jones. It would be cool if they could somehow get his character worked into the series.
The Mighty Joss returning to TV for a Marvel project, what else one can wish?? Ohh I found, let's unite SHIELD and Captain Hammer against the Evil League of Evil! :)

How awesome would Adam Baldwin be as Frank Simpson, aka Nuke, aka Scourge?
What I'm wondering is if this will be a superhero show or more of a spy show.
This could potentially be quite good. I look forward to seeing the pilot. But surely it will cost too much? Because if they do it on the cheap then it may look crappy
How awesome would it be to have Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan on the SHIELD show together!
Things are improving in that sense. However, for something like this you know it's only going to be SKY who cough up top dollar to show it in the UK,
this is my dilemma too! My first DVD purchase for several years!
