Actress Amanda Abbington has been confirmed as appearing in the new run of Sherlock episodes...

A flurry of (well-labelled, at least) Sherlock spoilers have been doing the online rounds since filming began on the third series last week, the majority centring around an exterior scene filmed in Portland Square, Bristol. Said shoot revealed what we imagine to be some fairly spoiler-y things to the fans-turned-extras in attendance, things we won't repeat here. If you want to go looking for it, it's out there. We'll leave it at that.

Officially confirmed by the BBC today though, is the involvement of a co-star spotted filming scenes with Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in Bristol: Amanda Abbington (Mr Selfridge, Being HumanCase Histories and much more). Abbington is a familiar face on UK television, with roles in dramas, soaps, geek fare, and, according to her IMDb page, was the actress behind 'Lesbian 2' in Martin Freeman-starring sex comedy Swinging With the FinkelsWhat also hasn't escaped most people's attention is that she also happens to be the long-term partner of Freeman, with whom she has two children. Sherlock is keeping it in the family then, always nice.

The Radio Times has heard that Abbington's as-yet unidentified role "significantly impacts upon the lives of John and Sherlock", so let the speculation begin. We are expecting a wedding in at least one episode this series, remember...
