Rik Mayall dies, aged 56

News Den Of Geek 9 Jun 2014 - 16:00

Terrible news: Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.

Horrible, horrible news. Comedian, actor and writer Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56.

The news has been confirmed by a spokesman for his management company, to the Press Association.

Mayall sprung to fame for many of us through The Young Ones. But heck: there's so much that he did. Bottom. Drop Dead Fred. The New Statesman. More recently, his work in Jonathan Creek. And his scene stealing Lord Flashheart in Blackadder too - one of many roles that's going to be enjoyed for many decades to come. Just watch this for proof.

One of the most gifted comedy actors of his generation - and legitimately a unique one - Mayall is survived by his wife and three children.

Mayall's death is a terrible loss, and a shocking one at such a young age. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at what must be a devastating time. Rest in peace, Mr Mayall.

This is gutwrenching.

RIP peoples poet

Hands up who likes me!!!

RIP Rik :(

Very sad news indeed.

He was a legend and a comic genius. Gone far too soon.

Gutted. Now we'll never know just how meat is on a Womble.

This is just terrible news... Yep, he was utter barmey madcap insane genius. 'Yeah, pop music, let's go!' I will never tire of that line.

A truly sad loss- He was hilarious in the recent sitcom, Man Down, where his madcap humour clearly continued to shine.

Night Night world...god bless me

Have I got time for a W...

No I will just go to sleep

Absolutely gutted. I was only watching "Georges Marvellous Medicine" on YouTube the other day.

Such a sad loss. R.I.P Rik.

This is awful, and a genuinely devastating loss to British culture as a whole, not just comedy. I was literally reading his "autobiography" Bigger than Hitler, Better than Christ earlier today, and it's one of the funniest things I've ever read. I imagine a lot of the country will be dusting off their box sets of The Young Ones, Bottom, and Filthy, Rich & Catflap in tribute. I know I will be. RIP.

that is so sad to hear :(

Yes, horrible shocking news. So strange to think of no more Rik Mayall performances. Such a waste. RIP

Sad News RIP Rik
I thought his name was spelt with a silent P

I usually am not bummed when a media icon dies. This is, however a huge exception. Long live the people's poet!

This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader. And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!

And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, "Other kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?"

The wife has just told me I'm heart broken grew up watching this legend from spending 6 weeks school holidays watching the young ones to his newest stuff but bottom was the best of his best .R I P Rick if heaven exist's it just gained a very very funny man

yeah nice one quality bit

Very sad. I recently watched a handful of Young Ones episodes from the DVD set. He was a very funny man.

R.I.P. Rik. This has hit me pretty hard,a true legend

So, so sad. So many great memories tho

Kevin Turvey, Richard Dangerous, Rick, Richie, Alan B'stard, Flashheart.

"I don't have moments of weakness. I'm Rik Mayall!" RIP Rik Mayall

No more adventures for Richard Richard and Eddie Hitler. This fills me with great sadness. And to think, we were so close to that Hooligan's Island TV series. Rest in peace, Rik.

Awful and completely unexpected news. Only 56! So sad. I know he'd been largely absent from our screen sinces his serious accident (he was lucky to survive that by all accounts), but he popped up from time to time in adverts (the funny Bombardier one springs to mind). His Flashheart from Blackadder was a comic creation worthly of Peter Sellers. Absolute genius. A very sad day for all comedy lovers.

Sad news. He'll live on as my imaginary friend though.

RIP Wick

Rik, Richie, Alan B'Stard, Lord Flasheart. Those names will forever bring a smile to my face, they were creations of one of my childhood comedy heroes. His manic energy in The Young Ones and Bottom, to the perfect portrayal on a slimy nasty Tory in The New Statesman made him one hell of a personality, someone who never failed to make us laugh till we cried. I'm crying now for a different reason, the world is less funny today. RIP Rik Mayall. :(

He was only 56? Death, you complete and utter bastard!

Are we related

I saw Rik Mayall live twice with the New Statesman stage show. It was pretty much the same story but there was something in his zest and magnetism that made it work both times. A true genius and a real loss.

True Comedy Genius(and I don't use that word lightly) If he hadn't have had the accident I'm sure he would have gone on to do some great movies to go along with his many great tv roles,
thanks for the laughs Richard Richard

Yeah, he was the best part of that otherwise (sadly) deplorable show. :(

Ouch, right in the feels. Well put. And we do still have his poems:

"Pollution, all around. Sometimes ... up. And sometimes ... down. But always ... around. Pollution - are you coming to my town, or am I coming to yours? We're on different buses, pollution. But we're both using petrol ... BOMBS!"

Was just talking about that with my brother, both of us agreed it was a truly exceptional performance

This is truly gutting... I've lived with this news for a couple of hours now. A world without Rik Mayall. Doesn't quite compute. RIP and thanks for so, so many laughs over the years.

Totally shocking news.

It's no coincidence that, as a diehard Blackadder fan, my favourite episodes (apart from Goodbyeeee, of course) both contain Lord Flashheart!

It seems such a shame that the last new thing I saw him in before he died was the pretty poor second Johnathan Creek episode he did.

RIP Rik.

"Hi bridesmaid, love the beard. Gives me something to..... Hang on to"

2014 is turning into a bit of a dreadful year. Could all my childhood heroes stop dying now plz :(

RIP Mr Mayall. I will beat the next bald, bespectacled man I see round the head with a bit of wood in your honour.

R.I.P. Rik. You made me laugh so so many times.

Let's raise a glass of Vzzz bucks to a true great.

Seems today was the day, at 33,l I finally got old.

Hahaha - B'stard!

Gold, Frankenstine and Grrrr... Best Christmas special EVER

DoG in sad news shocker :-( RIP Rik

Some artists are admired, but if you met them in real life, they'd turn out to be toolbags. They'd still be talented, but that's it. But Rik seemed like someone who was both respected *and* loved.

I have an unwritten rule of not commenting on any posts ever. But this made me well up and smile at the same time. Cheers man. #rip the duke of kiddiminster

Kevin Turvey, investigative journalist. I always hoped he might return one day.

So glad Kevin Turvey was mentioned.
Thank you for making me laugh during my horrible teenage years.

The Comic Strip, The Young Ones, Blackadder, The New Statesmen, Bottom.....

Now that is a list!

Apparently he had never been the same after his Quad bike accident that left him in a coma for several days.

RIP Rik. The best Doctor Who we never had!

Loved him as Mad Gerald in the Black Adder too! RIP Rik.

Anyone recall his sublime Jackanory telling of George's Marvellous Medicine? RIP Rik.

George: "My God!..."
Flasheart: "Yes I suppose I am!"

it wasn't me it was the other three

Such sad news, Mayall was a comedy icon for me since I first watched Drop Dead Fred and everything else I saw after. I loved how whenever he was a guest on chat shows you could tell that the hosts were always on edge in case Rik took over. He just shone in whatever he did, whether it was Young Ones, Bottom, his guest roles in other sitcoms and even the Bombardier ads.

"If word gets out I'm missing 500 girls would kill themselves, and I wouldn't want them on my conscience. Not when they ought to be on MY FACE!"

GUTTED, never got to see him give cannon bal taffy o'jones any kind of payback :(

The greatest imaginary friend we ever had. RIP Rick. Beyond gutted over this.

Damn. He was fantastic and he leaves a great legacy of comedy for us to cherish.

"In Biro Vyvian...In Biro!"

"Viv, Can you really kill yourself with Laxatives?"

"Right On!"

'Vivian - Where did you get that Howitzer?'

Eat Neal first...he tastes of Strawberries

everyone has already said what I wanted to say, so just left to simply say goodbye Rik, you will be greatly greatly missed

Yes you are my father...now give me your car keys and 30 years back dated pocket money.

Truly sad news. He was such a huge part of my childhood (Bottom and Bad News being my favourites) so it's a real shame. R.i.p.

Sadly his health was never the same after his quad bike accident - he had longterm memory problems and epilepsy caused by the brain damage suffered then, and its likely thats what killed him in the end.

Bottom was the first 'adult' show I loved as a kid, Richie completely cracked me up while making me feel a bit sick at the same time. As a teenager I discovered the Kevin Turvey video in a second-hand shop and tried to learn the five-minute monologues. Rik was only the same age as my dad, it's so sad - but nice to read all the tributes from younger comedians who consider him a kind of god, he'd surely love that!

I don't know how widely known this is outside Ireland, but one of his last roles was in a sitcom here called Damo & Ivor. He was a similar character to the character he played in Man Down, playing the crooked father of posh Dublin southside boy Ivor and was naturally the best thing in it. There was a lovely interview with the two creators of the show on the radio here yesterday, talking about what huge fans of his they were and how they wrote the character with him in mind, never thinking for one moment that he would agree to do it. They were still pinching themselves when he turned up a day early for the shoot.

Rick: "Amazulu...!"
SPG: "Is that right? Ahm a Glaswegian!"

RIP, Mr. Mayall

I was also a great fan of him, though, I most of the time kept silent about it, I live in Belgium and he is not so much known in Belgium, though he was of course a first rate comedian, if there ever will be one and was one, I must say: his dead came as no surprise to me, actually I expected it from many years before, though I wished of course that he could have been here for many years more, I think he was a very vulnerable man, my thoughts and condolences are with his fans, friends and of course family, and my thoughts are with Rik himself, Rik, I hope you have a very pleasant life in the hereafter, love and R.I.P. from Alysa!
