Bradley James rules out Merlin spin-off

Merlin star Bradley James thinks it's time to "hang up the chain-mail" and won't be appearing in any Merlin spin-offs...

Aside from the fact that Merlin creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy wouldn't be involved (having left Shine TV for pastures new at the end of series five) little has been heard about the mooted spin-off for the BBC fantasy show.

Last last November, Broadcast reported that Shine was looking to develop a potential Merlin spin-off set in the same world and featuring characters from the Arthurian series, though if one of those characters is Arthur Pendragon, Bradley James won't be the man to play him.

Speaking to the LA Times, James confirmed that a spin-off "...was something discussed, but I think it’s time for me to hang up the chain mail, to be honest with you, and pass the mantle on to the next person who shall take on the throne of Arthur Pendragon. The post-Merlin era is an exciting time to look forward to… Variety is the spice of life. That’s the fantastic thing about acting is all the different challenges it can provide you with. To limit yourself just to one would be foolish, therefore I’m looking forward to different things that come my way."

So they literally couldn't pay him to get him back anywhere near that show. Huh.

I think he's right. I would love to see him and Colin in something else together though. They had awesome chemistry.

I'd like to see producers make The Return to Camelot series into a movie or tv show. I saw Searching for Arthur recommended on here a while back and read it and thought it was excellent. I read #2 over the holidays. Fun series with a female lead.

What about a remake of Blake's Seven with Bradley and Colin? Or the Three Musketeers? I could watch them in anything. Damn -- make them the new Doctor and companion!

I want to see a spin-off based around Merlin in the modern world. He could have his own little Scooby Gang and deal with stuff that happens while waiting for Arthur to return.

haha that is exactly what Leonard Nemoy said about Spock. He even wrote a book called "I am not Spock". Riiiighhtt :)

I don't think he'll get any better role then 'Arthur'. He is only 29, if something better did come along, that would be great but I don't think that might happen. He hasn't been in that many shows and I can't see him play anyone else.

It's very soon to say everything definitively, imho...Maybe with a long hiatus and a chance to do other things, coming back to Arthur (maybe in a well-written film, not tv?) may not look so bad...?!? I certainly hope so!!
What made the Merlin show for me absolutely was the Colin/Bradley chemistry. I know from experience that good acting opportunities are hard to come by, and I'm sure both Colin and Bradley that this tv show was a great opportunity. Given some time, a good script, and good circumstances I hope Bradley will change his mind. Seeing the characters develop over 5 years was certainly a gift to we fans. If the producers didn't want fans to yearn after what would happen to THIS Merlin and Arthur next, why make Arthur pass in such long-suffering yet hopeful circumstances? I hope it all works out so we can see Colin/Bradley/Merlin/Arthur on screen for a happier resolution. There is enough death and dissolution in real life. In my entertainment, I want the hopeful reunions to follow through, lol!

Arthur is probably the best role he ever had, such a shame BBC canceled it so soon.

NO NO NO!!! Please! No spin-offs! Leave it alone. It's perfect the way it is.

What Bradley James says is fair enough. However I wouldn't want to see a spin off if it didn't include both Colin and Bradley the Arthurian legends have been done to death over the years. The main thing that made this version different was the chemistry of the cast, the focus on Merlin and having Merlin and Arthur be young and of a similar age. It's also what made the ending bloody ridiculous, Arthur of the legends ruled over the golden age of Camelot for a lifetime, he was about 60 when he died in the legends. To finish him off so young in the series was spitting in the face of the people who had enjoyed the show for 5 years. So unless they bring him back as a reincarnation for a reboot for at least one special they can shove Merlin and any spin off.

Bradley has shown himself to be an actor of exceptional passion. I mean that last episode actually freaked me out ..emotionally! It was like I knew they were acting, but somewhere I got caught up between reality and fiction. I contribute that to all the wonderful actors and their acting in the entire Merlin series. I wish them all much success and really hope to see all of them on the Big Screen. I really would like to see the "bromance" of Colin and Bradley again though. They really worked great together. Great work guys!

Perfect!?! Most died!!!!!!

no one can play King Arthur like bradley James no matter who they get to fill the role it will never be the same ):
