ABC has high hopes for Joss Whedon's new Avengers-universe series, currently filming its pilot episode...

Are you ready for the most exciting picture of a utility vehicle you've seen since yesterday's Mad Max 4 extravaganza? Then be our guest:

Yes, the pilot for Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. has swung into production, and once in the can, will be fast-tracked to the top of ABC's pile according to network boss Paul Lee. There was very little bet-hedging going on when Lee enthusiastically discussed the new Marvel/ABC co-venture with press just over a week ago, and plenty of indication that the pilot is more or less a formality in his eyes.

Episode one is reported to be set in the aftermath of the New York battle that closed The Avengers, and features latecomer Chloe Bennet as superhero-obsessed Skye, stalwart Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson (before you ask, we don't know how they've wangled that chronology-wise), Iain De Caestecker as techy Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as scientific whizzkid Simmons and Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May. Samuel L Jackson also hasn't ruled out making an appearance as Nick Fury.

The earliest we could see the fruits of Whedon's labour is this autumn, which would be a speedy turnaround from pitch to screen, but a necessary one to fit around the writer/director's The Avengers 2 schedule.
