Marvel bringing Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones to Netflix

Four Marvel characters are getting their own original Netflix series, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones and more...

2015 is already looking like quite the year for geek movies, and now, thanks to a new deal between Marvel and Netflix, streaming TV will be hot on its trail.

Four thirteen-episode original live-action Netflix series, one each for Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, will be arriving from 2015, culminating in a joint The Defenders miniseries.

President of Marvel Entertainment, Alan Fine, had this to say about the news: "This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure."

Just to reiterate, the Marvel/Netflix deal comes to well over fifty TV episodes confirmed before the word 'pilot' has even been uttered. The times, as the man said, are a'changing.

I get quite concerned that we may soon be feeling a bit of Marvel overkill. They are everywhere you look right now.

I hopes I be wrong but, like a certain girl called Emma I dated back in 1987, they are sure putting it about!

Hopefully the creatives behind Shield aren't involved. After reading an interview with Jeph Loeb on a different site proclaiming that episode 6 was going to be amazing, I'll give an hyperbole from him a miss in future.

Another hope is that it sticks to the Netflix delivery model of releasing all episodes at once.

Frikkin amazing news. I really don't mind about the influx of Marvel films/shows as long as they keep up the quality.
They really seem to have a clear plan and idea of what they want to do and I'm all prepared to support them!

Eh, Episode 6 was the best yet by far.

Thats not saying much

I absolutely agree but if you had read Loeb's assessment of it in advance, you'd think it was an Emmy award episode that was about to be shown with quotes such as "It’s an extremely tense, frightening episode and even though some of us fans are grown might get a little moist around the eyes." and "when folks see episode 6 next week that whatever investment they have in our cast will be dialed up to 11 and it just keeps coming at them after that."

I wonder with this culminating in a Defenders mini series if they would be bold enough to at least introduce Stephen Strange before the film. Even in an ancillary role.

I have no problems about these being made, I know that Marvel have been going mental with all the things they're releasing but with two films a year it means that so many characters would never be realised on screen and I am a big enough geek to want to at least see them. In fact if a Peggy Carter series happens then I'd have a hysterical nosebleed if that introduced a version of The Invaders.

Yep, it's good to see these things from my perspective

That's fair enough. I had no idea about Loeb's comments and maybe would be in the same boat if I had.

I was hopeful Episode 6 was a turning point and not a high point, but if they've been hyping it so much, maybe I'm wrong.

I'm with you. I can't wait to see who's playing who. I'm excited! Now I gotta get Netflix, well in 2015 anyway.

Holy cr@p, that's amazing!

You really need your own page. You're freaking hilarious.

Will they all exist in the same universe?! So, we could see Luke Cage alongside Iron Man et al?

Agents of SHIELD
Iron Fist
Luke Cage
Jessica Jones
The Defenders

How did this happen? Eleven superhero based television series, with nine announced this year.

He really needs to get out more...

No this is where Daredevil can shine - it could be an awesome mix of courtroom drama and action series!

Interesting strategy considering how these various properties and characters are street level and Hells Kitchen based so there's potential for crossover characters and storylines between different series and presumably shared production costs and rotating sets.A television serial format may well prove more appropriate to adapting Daredevil properly and since it's being made for netflix might allow the producers to be less stringent about action sequences compromising rules about the depiction of violence on television networks.

Oh and lets get a semi big name for daredevil, make it like a HBO series and only have about 12 eos in the season if that and we're sorted!

Well, this was unexpected. I really hope it ends up being part of the MCU, or at least just set in it. There's no reason why they can't be set in the same universe but not cross over. I just hope they're available outside of the US, I'll likely get a Netflix subscription just to watch these.

This is great, my only problem is what about people who don't have Netflix, I don't. If the shows are set in the MCU, then how is it fair for people who want to see everything in the MCU but can't afford Netflix or don't have the internet, shocking I know, but not everyone does.

It's supposed to be from what I've read. I'd be upset if they weren't connected.

DoG! Call to arms! Write an article of your best informed guesses of what this means for the future! Including casting!

Avengers 4, Civil War! Avengers 4, Civil war!

Avengers 3 should take care of Thanos. Plus it doesn't rhyme.

Avengers 3 - Herbal Tea
Avengers 3 - Hepatitis b
Avengers 3 - To a tolerable degree
Avengers 3 - Weeeeeee!!!

Avengers 5:
Shuck n Jive!
Breast Cancer Drive!
Stayin Aliiiiiiiive!

I think Christian Bale would make an excellent Daredevil.

No different to Sky picking the series up.

Netflix is a fiver a month. That's 16p a day. 87% of the UK population has Internet at home.

I agree with you both :-)

That would just complete the Marvel/DC actor switching lol.

Classic. Like Not Another Teen Movie. "You're both on."

I live in the sticks, so my Internet sucks. But I'll figure something out!

But is this confirmed? I mean, Arrow isn't necessarily part of the DCU.

Dude I don't know. I read it in an article. Might be true, might be poo.

Wow, even on TV DC is behind Marvel...just look at DC's shows: Hourman? Constantine?

The worst part is they'll be on The CW...

If you live in the US...what the heck man? Go get Netflix RIGHT NOW.
If you live in latam like I do, don't worry, maybe Canal Sony will pick these up like they picked Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

I'm quite sure that's the first time the word 'classic' and 'Not Another Teen Movie' have been used in a comment together.

Avengers3 will be Thanos & Infinity Guantlet vs The (by then expanded line up of) Avengers, Gaurdians of the Galaxy, the Defenders and SHIELD!

Eventually yes...

But first we will have these four series, all set in the same area of New York so likely to crossover before they join up in a version of The Defenders.

The Defenders will then probably be involved in Avengers3.

Buy the DVDs; House of Cards was launched on Netflix and is now available to buy.

It's no Naked Gun, but it sure ain't the Starving Games.

THAT sounds so amazing. This stuff always happens in comics, obviously, and when it comes to movies, it's usually trilogies (star wars, LOTR), but trilogy doesn't even begin to describe the epicness of this endeavor. And a cousin of mine is like Richie C up there, saying it might be too much. As long as the quality keeps up with the quantity, I'm happy. I'm a marvel fan. I marvel at those that don't think this is marvelous! Only X-Men is anywhere near them, and yet all you hear is "Marvel vs. DC". It's really more like Marvel vs. Marvel.

Daredevil! Yes!

Please make it character-driven and not the syrup, popcorn crap that has been all of Marvel's output so far.

The guy from Arrow hinted at being in the Justice League.

Get William Shatner! A mixture of Denny Crane and Kungfu fighting Kirk rolled into one!

Fair? It is a business not a service.

Yeah I'll probably do that.

Looking forward to this... now if they would only do this with 2000AD then I would be one happy camper. Imagine a 10 Episode Judge Dredd series with Karl Urban of course. I would also like to see Rogue Trooper, Slaine and a Strontium Dog TV shows. Ahhh daydreams :)

Looking at the clues that does seem to be where we are heading...

And I like it.

This ain't the dark knight trilogy. Marvel's got this, son.

I wonder if they might be lining up the Infinity Gauntlet story for phases 4, 5 & 6? I can see a trilogy of Infinity Gauntlet films followed by a Civil War story line that will keep audiences coming back for years.

Yeah. I hope they finally capture the gritty, john frankenheimer-style adult-orientated aesthetic that Marvel has always strived for.

Hmmm, don't think I mentioned any of those things you did.

I reckon Ben Affleck would make an excellent Batman.

I'm not sure about that. Between Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and DC's Arrow, Arrow is by far superior (in my opinion).

That will never happen... Right, now let's catch up on some of these older articles.

I think that would be pushing it, but maybe a Civil War film instead of Avengers 4 - once they have enough characters built up;

Avengers 1 = Loki
Avengers 2 = Ultron
Avengers 3 = Thanos
Civil War

Daredevil is perfect for a TV series. No huge budget required. Just a blind guy in a mask with a stick, and some good criminal storylines, with a series-long Kingpin arc culminating in a final showdown with the fat crime boss. Do it.

Squeel. Great stuff eh mate? Loving Arrow, can't wait to get more marvel. Netflix is the land of the gods.

Total fan girl squeel lol. I'm glad im not the only one who likes Arrow Paul, no one else has the time of day for it, meh!

I'm talking about big name properties. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is crap only because it's more of a side project, not a Marvel Studios thing.

Not to mention Agents of shield's ratings are a lot better than Arrow's...
