Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan is to produce a new witch hunt drama for HBO...

By opting to enter the original content business by making episodic stories, Netflix seemed to have been attempting to emulate the success of HBO. The cable channel may now repay the flattery of imitation by borrowing the talents of one of the streamer’s hottest talents.

Jenji Kohan, creator of the smart and funny prison drama Orange is the New Black, has signed a deal to write an produce a new HBO show based on the Salem Witch Trials.

The trials, which famously inspired Arthur Miller’s allegorical play The Crucible, took place in Massachusetts in the early 1690s. They remain one of the most famous cases of mass hysteria, a landmark event in modern religious history and a source of inspiration to writers seeking to explore themes of religion, politics and gender relations.

Kohan’s take, which is as yet unnamed, is set to be ‘provocative’. We don’t doubt it.
