Channel 5 has acquired the rights to Fox's high-profile comic-book series, Gotham...

Here's a coup for Channel 5, albeit a pricy one. The UK channel has secured the broadcast rights to Fox's forthcoming Batman prequel series, Gotham.

The rumoured-to-be expensive deal may explain Channel 5's choice to drop Once Upon A Time and Justified, neither of which proved to be the ratings draw the channel was looking for, and since-reversed decision to drop The Walking Dead. With a costly new US drama on its books, it could be that the budget didn't stretch to sticking with the older shows.

Starring Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, Jada Pinkett-Smith and a clutch of promising new(ish)comers, Gotham tells the story of Det. Jim Gordon's early career, when the city's rogues gallery was packed with classic Batman villains - The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy - in their embryonic forms.

Early reviews of Gotham had nothing but good things to say about the noir-ish crime show, which has been described as more heightened police procedural than straight-out comic book superhero drama.

Gotham starts on Fox in the US on the 22nd of September. We'll bring you news of the UK premiere date as soon as it's announced.
