Sean Pertwee cast as Gotham's Alfred

Sean Pertwee has joined the cast of Gotham as a younger version of Wayne family butler, Alfred...

We heard over the weekend that The OC and Southland's Ben McKenzie had taken the lead part of Jim-not-yet-the-Commissioner Gordon in Fox's forthcoming Batman prequel, Gotham, and now key roles Alfred Pennyworth and The Penguin have also been assigned.

Sean Pertwee is to play tough ex-marine Alfred, butler to the Wayne family and a man "fiercely protective" of young charge Bruce following a tragic event (we're being deliberately vague, but come on, it's hardly going to be a surprise). It's a fine choice, by our reckoning.

Joining Pertwee will be Robin Lord Taylor in the role of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin. Variety describes the character thusly, "With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney, and hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor."

Taylor was most recently seen in The Walking Dead's fourth season (pictured below), and before that, a clutch of small roles in TV and film drama including Law & Order and the much-celebrated Person Of Interest.

Good lord! Sean Pertwee as a character that doesn't die? What's next? Sean Bean making it to the end?

This smells like a stand alone, but I'm wondering if this is going to be the prequel to Batfleck.

I liked a British Penguin. Just something about him having a cockney accent always seemed right to me.

Well, I was looking forward to seeing Jeremy Irons play Alfred, but I think I'm even more excited about Sean Pertwee. In fact, I'm quite looking forward to this series. Add to that Flash, and the inevitable third series of Arrow and we should have a good 2014-15 TV season.

Hahaha! Sausages!

Can we start campaigning for Olivia Coleman as Aunt Harriet?

I agree -- I've never really found him interesting as a villain, but as soon as Paul Dini/Rocksteady gave him a cockney accent in Arkham City, he suddenly made sense. I'm convinced Toby Jones is the perfect choice to play him as an adult.

YES YES AND YES. Toby Jones would be perfect.

The 3rd Doctor's son is looking after Batman????

Mind = blown

Your argument is in invalid

All hail Gotham

Have to disagree I'm afraid. The first moment that the Penguin made sense to me was in the pre-52 run when he took over Gothams criminal enterprises from The Black Mask. That is when (for the first time for me at least) his character was played up as above all - a mob boss. That is who he is, if it weren't for the name and the physical differences (which are not always uniform) he is the classic capo di capo.
