Sci-fi thriller Extant coming to CBS next summer

Extant, a futuristic thriller from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, has received a straight-to-series order from CBS...

Whatever the narrative shortcomings of Under the Dome, CBS' current Stephen King adaptation (read our spoiler-filled reviews, here), genre fans can't but be pleased that a major network has chosen a big, glossy sci-fi as its hope for summer 2013.

Under the Dome has already attracted and maintained a healthy enough audience for a second season to be commissioned, and that success appears to have paved the way for another summer sci-fi series to receive the green light. Also from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is futuristic thriller Extant, thirteen episodes of which are coming to CBS in mid 2014.

Telling the story of a female astronaut struggling to reintegrate with her family upon her return from a year in outer space, Extant is another Steven Spielberg-executive produced, high-concept series for CBS. The network has forgone the pilot process and given a straight-to-series order for the future-set thriller. Not too shabby news for sci-fi fans, that.
