Syfy's Legion spin-off, Dominion, heads into pilot production aided by new cast member Anthony Head...

You only need remember 1992's Buffy the Vampire Slayer to recognise that often the best TV spin-offs can come from less-than critically adored sources. That's good news for Syfy's new project, Dominion, taking inspiration as it does from 2010's Paul Bettany-starring Legion, a film that wasn't a big hit with reviewers ("Celestial tosh" was Nigel Floyd's verdict, "a very silly, crummily scripted mess" was Tim Robey's).

Dominion features characters based on those from Legion to tell "an epic supernatural action drama set twenty-five years after the events of the movie and picking up in the aftermath of a catastrophic war between an army of angels and mankind". Some overlap with Supernatural territory there, one feels.

The pilot is about to begin shooting this month, and if all goes to plan, a series will follow thereafter. Recent cast announcements include Buffy and Merlin's Anthony Head as David Weel, the megalomaniac president of new-look Las Vegas. Joining Head are Game Of Thrones' Doreah, Roxanne McKee as the daughter of a powerful ruling family, and The Borgias' Luke Allen-Gale as son of the President and church figure.

We'll bring you more news on Dominion as it arrives.

(And yes, that picture may be getting on for fifteen years old now, but we couldn't help it. He'll always be Giles to us).
