Let's start the week with a tabloid rumour: could a big casting change on Doctor Who be imminent?

Spoilers: this is tabloid rumour at this stage, but on the off-chance there's more to it, we're going to employ our spoiler squirrel, by the name of Daphne.

Is the Doctor’s ‘impossible girl’ leaving Doctor Who? The internet certainly seems to think so. Over the weekend The Mirror broke the story that, according to their unnamed source, Jenna Coleman would leave the show at Christmas.

“The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out,” their source suggested.

“By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever,” the report continued. “She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”

The Mirror also stated that “it was very much a mutual decision,” and that “it’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

The tabloid press and an unnamed source may not make this the most immediately trustworthy rumour of all time, we should note. That said, from the 'nu-who' companions only Rose and the Ponds lasted for two full series, while every other companion dipped out after one full run.

Coleman’s Clara is quick becoming one of the longest-lasting new companions then, when you combine series 7b, the added screen-time of The Day Of The Doctor and her co-starring role in series 8.
