Kill List and Sightseers director Ben Wheatley is to helm the first two episodes of Doctor Who series 8...

Here's a piece of news so exciting we nearly bashed our keyboard into bits as we typed it up. It's been revealed that Ben Wheatley, the quite brilliant helmer behind A Field In England, Sightseers, Kill List and Down Terrace, is to direct episodes of Doctor Who series 8.

The news, broken over at Screen Daily, is that Wheatley will actually be directing the first two episodes of Doctor Who series 8, and thus the first two full episodes of the Peter Capaldi tenure in the TARDIS. Revealing that he's been a fan since his childhood, with Tom Baker his Doctor of choice, Wheatley said that "I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor Who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor".

He is, with no disrespect to anyone else on the show, the highest profile director to take on episodes of Doctor Who. He's also one of British cinemas best working directors. Throw in the Peter Capaldi factor, and this is, in our humble view, quite brilliant news.

Roll on series 8, then...

The effect of the director of the show is always ignored in a rush to bash the writing. I'm desperate to see Adam Smith back after Eleventh Hour and The angels double parter in series 5. a good director can make all the difference

Wow! Looks like we might actually have been right. Now if only they'd have had Daniel Mays as The Master opposite Smith like I suggested...
