Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on Peter Capaldi's Doctor
The Doctor Who showrunner shares his thoughts on casting Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor...
Speaking to press after last night's live Doctor Who announcement, Steven Moffat was asked if he'd had a short list for the role of the Twelfth Doctor, "Yes," he answered, "the list went 'Peter Capaldi'. It was a very short list."
Capaldi has been on Moffat's radar as a potential Doctor for "a fair amount of time", the showrunner said. "I happened to know he's a big fan. There's something very seductive about an utterly brilliant, arresting looking leading man actor – one of the most talented actors in Britain – who you happen to know is a big fan of the show. You start to think 'maybe we should so something about that'."
Now they've done exactly that, what kind of a Doctor does Moffat think Capaldi will make?
“The truth is we don't know. I've seen him do Doctorish stuff and its worked. I've seen him deal with the technobabble. I've seen him deal with the nonsense. I wrote scenes that were deliberately impossible just to see 'can you do the impossible even without gunk poured on you and now were going to pour gunk on you and throw a lizard on you and ask you to say all this stuff and explain the plot'. We don't know yet. We're going to work on that and, as with Matt – Matt developed hugely as he approached the first episode. We'll do the same with Peter."
One word Moffat did use to describe Capaldi in the role of the Twelfth Doctor was "magnificent". We can't see many people disagreeing with him on that count.
