Doctor Who: a closer look at the classic villain redesign

News Louisa Mellor 5 Mar 2013 - 08:05

Some classic monsters are returning in Doctor Who series 7B, and the BBC has given us a proper look at the redesign...

Warning: contains a spoiler for which classic monsters are coming back to Who.

We saw a reflected glimpse of the new-look Ice Warriors in this first poster for the second half of the current series, but now a proper, full-length Greenie shot has arrived. Fill your Martian-loving boots below:

The Ice Warriors are to appear in the third episode of the new run, written by Mark Gatiss and directed by Douglas MacKinnon. We'll be bringing you a round-up of what we know about the eight new Doctor Who episodes, debuting on Saturday the 30th of March in the UK, very soon.

I'm surprised how close it is to the classic series version. I was expecting a Silurian-style total redesign, but I'm glad it isn't. Though I'm betting the top is a helmet that will be taken off in the episode.

It looks great, but at the same time it kind of looks like an action figure, not sure if that's a bad thing or not though.

I don't like these shots of costumes as the lighting is too harsh to get an idea of how it will be represented on screen, In saying that it does still stand up well to the lighting which bodes well for how it will appear on creen. I like the redesign

OMG. Brilliant, after the disappointment of the new look silurians (especially if you goggle some of the designs they rejected) these look totally new but also have an authencity that resonates with the original designs beautifully. Masterful

Like Dredd, Ice Warriors never take their helmet off. Though in the past, that may have been because you'd have found Bernard Bresslaw's grinning face underneath!

Ssssssssssssssssweet!Looks like our favourite martians have gone bald and lost the hair around the joins to make the creation of CGI models easier in group shots in the future.Otherwise though, this new design is still consistent ,reptilian, intimidating and mighty.I've always respected the ice warriors as a species of monsters because they were never generic and had individual motivations in their stories but were still good for the odd invasion as you would expect a traditional martian to be.Maybe we should expect a sly reference to trisilicate in the story as a nod to their history.Suspect post production on this story will be a bit of a bitch since they have to synchronise Nick Briggs voice work with what the actor's do physically on set and the design doesn't accommodate this like the cybermen's does.Hissssssssss.

Thats FANTASTIC!

It looks amazing...Imagine how good its going to look in the shadows and when its being spooky and evil. Thats exactly HOW to update an old classic monster and not make it look worse than the original.

It looks hardcore...and mean..you would not want one of these getting mad with you and coming at you in the dark. Even if it does look a bit like its eaten too many martian mince pies.....

Now if the voice is equally spooky and menacing this is going to be good...Its just a shame they are only going to be on screen for 45 minutes. Damn you Moffat! Oh well....

After the Silurians, Moffat Daleks, Cybusmen, and Snotarans, it's nice to see an updating that looks and feels authentic.

Now what matters is if the iconic sonic weapon does anything different...

And how they act in the story. And that's what worries me the most.

Not bad... Will have to see it moving before I properly make up my mind
