Doctor Who: new series 7 poster & episode title revealed

A brand new poster arrives for the seventh episode of the current Doctor Who series, The Bells Of St John...

What with all the 50th anniversary and An Adventure In Space And Time talk around right now, it's almost easy to forget that in under a month, eight brand spanking new episodes of Doctor Who are starting on the BBC.

This explosive first poster for episode seven, which goes by the now-confirmed title of The Bells of St John, is here to remind us. As you can see it features the Doctor, new companion Clara/Oswin, a rather splendid motorbike, and plenty of broken glass. Take a look in the reflection in the shattered panes, and there are more than a couple of monster clues too...

The Bells of St John, which kicks off the new series run on Saturday the 30th of March, comes written by Steven Moffat, and directed by Colm McCarthy. It's being sold as a "modern day urban thriller" set against the backdrop of London's new and old iconic landmarks, The Shard and Westminster Bridge (one of which, judging by this poster, might not make it out of the episode intact).

The BBC has also confirmed which foes the Doctor will be up against in the episode, so look away now if you don't want to be spoiled. Still with us? Good. They're a new race known as the Spoonheads (nickname or genus, we're yet to find out), who are battling the Doctor as he discovers "something sinister lurking in the Wi-Fi".

If that's not enough Who to sprinkle on your cornflakes this morning, then here's Steven Moffat talking up what else is set to arrive in the new episodes:

"It's the 50th year of Doctor Who and look what's going on! We're up in the sky and under the sea! We're running round the rings of an alien world and then a haunted house. There's new Cybermen, new Ice Warriors and a never before attempted journey to the centre of the TARDIS. And in the finale, the Doctor's greatest secret will at last be revealed! If this wasn't already our most exciting year it would be anyway!"

All together now, "Pokers and tongs, say the bells of St John's"...

Soooo excited, however 'the Doctor's greatest secret will at last be revealed' This makes me nervous. My appeal with the Doctor is the mystery that surrounds him. That underlines the "?" symbol that has appeared in various guises with various doctors. He's a bit of an emigma. If the reveal we get to the secret is nothing short of mind blowingly amazing it could possibly ruin the entire show for me. I'd rather them not even ask the question of 'who' in the first place and just get on with it.
I'm the same with Boba Fett and Vader. They used to be my two favourite characters ever - Their history was in the mind of the viewer who made them as cool as they wanted. Now instead of two badass villians I just see two wingey little brats. *sigh*

Isn't a spoonhead a nickname for a Cardassian? A DS9/Dr Who crossover would be pretty cool actually

Love the monster faces in the shards of glass!

Pretty sure there are at least two Ice Warriors in there, as well...

Judging by previous hyperbole ('he'll rise higher than ever before then fall so much further') you probably have nothing to worry about.

Was the question not to be asked at 'The Fall of the Eleventh on the fields of Tenzalore'? which would suggest (intentionally?) that a regeneration might be coming or just a ruse to get fans talking?

Note the monster faces in the shards:

1. Your first look at the new Ice Warriors (far right and bottom center)

2. That guy near the top left corner looks like the Trickster from SJA

Well pleased that they have chosen not to radically redesign the Ice Warriors although it looks like they have altered their clamps for the purpose of more dexterity. The director of The Cold War was recently interviewed about his work on it on a podcast and divulged that they went old school Gerry Anderson with the effects for the story ,using model work for the submarine establishing shots. It was pretty uncomfortable for the actors apparently and i think the crew had to observe a lot of the same procedures they employed shooting Waters of Mars because of all the water on set with electrical apparatus.Guess all the motorcycle action scenes in the first story will be reminiscent of the TV movie and Pertwee.Matt's purple coat is very much in that tradition too.Wonder if the BBC will negotiate cinema screenings of the first episode of the run as a test run for the anniversary special or if they will restrict that to advance press previews as usual.

Poster is awful and the title tells us nothing. Also, Spoonheads? Really?

After the last few episodes have been so great, I really hope this keeps the standard up.

I'm pretty dang excited now, but I'd still rather have Zygons than "Spoonheads". Well, there's still the centre of the TARDIS to see

The poster is awful, especially hate the way his hair is windswept but she looks serene. It tells us current day City of London will feature in the episode.

"... and a never before attempted journey to the centre of the TARDIS. " Whoa! Does that mean that we finally are getting a TARDIS indoor episode with rooms (-> swimming pool?) and not just corridors?!

Oh wow. An episode set on Earth. How unusual.

Series 7, not episode 7.

We see the spoonheads (I presume), Cybermen, Ice Warriors, a thing down the bottom left that I'm not certain of, and yes, what looks like the Trickster a couple of times. Very similar, apart from the top hat I believe. Maybe same race, different creature? Or maybe different race, repeated design ;)

I hope it's same creature, new style. Gotta go with the times, y'know.

Maybe Trickster's having a night at the opera?

I think Matt Smith has been confirmed for at least all of S8...

Considering it's the first story introducing the new companion for the rest of the series,it had to be. .Asylum of the Daleks was set on two different planets as well as Earth and there is another visit to an alien planet in the next set of episodes too.

Why is he dressed as Willy Wonka?

From memory (old...old...memory) the 1st ever season of Dr Who (with William Hartnell as doctor) had a Tardis-only episode. No swimming pools, but it wasn't just corridors either.

Tegan's first episode involved her getting lost in the TARDIS

Once we've got all this nostalgia out of the way, can Who start looking forwards again please? It's nice and all that, but the kids don't care or won't get references and so on, and after RTD's lengthy and at times eye wateringly boring final season or two I'd much rather the Doctor looked to the future and not back.

And creatues in the WiFi? Radically different from creatures in the gas pipes or in the TV signal.

What next? Monsters in the Dairylea?

Give us proper aliens and space ships and all that good stuff. There's not nearly enough spaceships in this show. If they trusted the viewers enough to remember what happened in multipart episodes the budget would allow for much more interesting settings and monsters.

After the great introduction to the new sidekick, I'm starting to fear that S08 will be ruined by cack handed nods to the past and anticlimatic non-reveals.

I'm still not 100% clear on who trapped the Tardis outside Amy's house at the end of S06.
