Could we see HBO's American Gods premiere this year?
The latest on HBO's Neil Gaiman adaptation, American Gods, suggests we could see episode 1 this year, but there's a big 'if'...
Having heard him chide A Song of Ice and Fire fans for pressuring George R. R. Martin to get a wriggle on with his saga, we all know how Neil Gaiman feels about the entitlement of fandom, and quite rightly too. As we are Martin, we're lucky to have Gaiman, and will wait as long as it takes him and HBO to settle on the best possible script for long-ish gestating project, American Gods.
That said, wouldn't it be fantastic if the latest buzz about the adaptation's state of readiness is true? HBO Watch, citing Gaiman's Twitter takeover at this March's Cambridge International Student Film Festival, says that "American Gods will debut this year if Gaiman can get the pilot script done in time to HBO's satisfaction." This year. As in 2013. As in mere months from where we are currently.
Of course, there's a big "if" slap-bang in the middle of that quote, so there's little point in our getting prematurely excited. Casting, production, post, it all takes time, and lord knows, we'd much rather things weren't rushed with this one, as it's an adaptation with the potential to be very special indeed.
The moment anything official comes in, we'll let you know.
