UPDATED: US remake of The Returned in development
A US version of French supernatural drama The Returned is on its way...
UPDATE: Contrary to the below, we've learned that the newly announced A&E remake is one and the same as the FremantleMedia adaptation formerly attached to production company, AbbottVision. Paul Abbott is no longer working on the project.
To clarify, that means there is currently one English-language version of Les Revenants/The Returned in development, and not two.
We spoke to FremantleMedia International, who told us the company "was previously developing the show with AbbottVision in the UK but has since agreed not to move forward together on this project. AbbottVision is currently developing poltergeist series 'The Deservers'.
AbbottVision and FremantleMedia International continue to work together on Paul Abbott's No Offence which is currently in production for Channel 4 in the UK."
It had to happen. The US network A&E, who brought us the Psycho remake/reboot Bates Motel, is developing its own version of spooky French drama, Les Revenants.
The original TV series, itself a remake of a 2004 film, focuses on events in a small French town after several members of the community appear to come back from the dead. It was much admired around these parts, so we take this news with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.
Full details of the American version are yet to emerge, but if it makes it to full production, the show will continue the trend for remaking European hits. Recent hits The Killing, The Bridge and House of Cards were all based on series from this side of the Atlantic.
For anyone keeping a tally, the newly announced US version of The Returned comes in addition to both the English remake in development by Shameless' Paul Abbott, and Resurrection, an unrelated but undeniably similar-sounding ABC series due to arrive in March 2014.
The second series of the French version is scheduled to air on Channel 4 late next year.
