No love for the Star Trek V Rock-man?

It could have been Rocky V instead of just rocky - Martin laments the loss of one particular Kirk show-down...

William Shatner wanted ten rock-creatures to fight on the 'God' planet Sha Ka Ree in his directorial pitch-in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). The video here shows the one that he actually got. These tests were enough to convince all concerned that the movie's ending should be rock monster-free.

Quite why the film's effects were so variable in quality remains open to dispute; some say that the major effects houses were booked up with Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and other pending blockbusters; others that Paramount had vanishingly little faith in Shatner's script, even though it had been re-worked by other writers. Others maintain that too much pre-production time was lost to the WGA strike.

To those who nixed this monster: I think you're all dumber than a bag of hammers. This could have been one of the best creepy prosthetic creatures of the 1980s.

Personally I think the reason it got axed was a possible lawsuit from Marvel comics, because the creature depicted is very Ben Grimm, isn't he? This is the kind of suit that might have brought The Thing a new level of interest in the Fantastic Four movies.

The suit cost $350,000 to make, so it's little wonder that Shatner's legion shrank from ten to one. Below are some production sketches and promo stills taken during the costume's creation.

Thats great - I never knew that existed. The creature does indeed look like a mash-up of the 'Thing' (with a more convincing costume than the past 2 FF movies) as well as the Golem from 'The Keep' and the Gnome King from Return to Oz.

It said Return to Oz to me too, through perhaps crossed with Arnie's T-800. Very interesting footage, though I doubt the film suffers any for lacking ten of those.

My baby...wow, so long ago...I sculpted the "Rockman" for Star Trek V. Lots of stories to tell, including why "Rocky" was cut, so if anyone is interested please leave a comment so I know someone is interested and I don't waste a lot of time typing!

Hey, I'm interested too! Been reading about the rockman for years, but only ever saw one (incomplete) photo until now. What's the inside scoop?

Hmmmm... In Star Trek Movie Memories, Shatner says that 6 rockmen were going to cost $300,000. But in his latest bio, he says that $350,000 was the cost of ONE rockman. (in 1988 dollars, no less!) The latter sounds a bit unbelievable - Denny Crane Memory Syndrome?

Yes, we were supposed to do six. Then one. After shooting in death valley (you can actually see a millisecond of the rockman's arm as the laser explodes next to Kirk. Bill loved the Rockman. Loved it!! It was that idiot Harve Bennett who "felt" it wasn't Star Trek. So I ended up cutting the arm off of the costume to use for insert shots that were

again not used. But there is footage we shot in death valley. I was surprised to see the crap scenes you see above on the bonus stuff. The scene was test footage from Paramount lot, that as you can see sucked because the mechanics looked horrible (sorry John). Any way

what Bill said in his book was in reference to the F/X guys (not to be confused with Makeup F/X). They SUCKED. When we did tests for lava and smoke they used and age old gimmick putting orange hexaplasm and sod for lava. Crap. Then for the flame test they had an

igniter in the mouth, and when they fired it off the head went up in flames. Tom Morga, the stunt man, and I were standing there and he said "no way I'm putting that on!" I suggested they extend the igniter out of the head and paint it black. Then, for smoke, the put a ton of tubing throughout the suit and put them together into

I'm keen to know exactly where does the rockman appear from as actually shot in the film, from a hole in the ground or from behind the collapsed cathedral of boulders?
