Den of Geek loves ... Hayden Panettiere

Anthony Enticknap

Last week, we started our new Den of Geek dartboard series. This week, to balance things out, we're focusing on someone we love: Heroes' Hayden Panettiere

Seeing as Hayden Panettiere spends most of her time in Heroes wearing a school cheerleader’s outfit, I thought it would be fitting to say a bit about her through the medium of poetry; to be precise, the angst-ridden poetry of teenage unrequited love.

I got as far as ‘Hayden, Hayden/Beautiful maiden/Please don’t go fadin’, before I realised I couldn’t think of a legitimate reason for why she’d be ‘wadin’, and gave up. Still, I hope she appreciates the gesture.

I’m not really sure what it is about Hayden that’s so great. Is it the fact that her initials make me think of inkjet printers and brown sauce? Possibly, though I’m more of a ketchup man. Is it the fact that she’s small (5’ 1”), cute and blonde? That seems fairly likely, but I generally prefer brunettes. Or is it the cheerleader thing? Almost definitely.

But on top of being very easy on the eye, she’s also a pretty good actress. It’s fairly safe to say I’ve never seen anyone portray a regenerating, superhuman cheerleader quite as well as she does.

Looking at her filmography on IMDb, she’s done quite a lot, considering her tender age. I’m not familiar with the majority of the titles, but she’s certainly been busy. She’s been in Malcom In The Middle, Ally McBeal, and Racing Stripes. She’s also lent her voice to several videogames and animated movies.

And her future? IMDb lists one movie in post-production, entitled Fireflies In The Garden. It stars the infinitely annoying Julia Roberts, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. After that, I guess there’s more series of Heroes to come.

Sadly, I doubt she’d be interested in my idea for a Showgirls sequel.

I much prefer a series that talks about what we love rather than what we hate. The Net is already full of too much snark and sarcasm, passing as humour, from geeks more interested in flexing their pedancy than explaining the appeal of something. It's much easier to sound "clever" when denigrating rather than praising. I'd hate to see Den of Geek follow that path of least resistance.

Showgirls? Ewwwww.

I like this idea too. I mean, everyone enjoys a snark, but not as much as declarations of undying love to people we will never actually meet.

That's why we're doing both.

A hot cheerleader with Wolverine like regenerative abilities...whets not to love. - A comic geeks dream. - Ms Pannettiere is just lovely She is also supposedly mates with Paris Hilton...which being the open minded hot blooded male that I am could bring up all manner of fun and naughty possibilities

A much better movie to remake would be "9 1/2 Weeks," with me as Mickey Rourke and HP as Kim Basinger.

In response to Karl, whenever I'm ranting about something, it's rarely to sound clever. It's just to get it off my chest! I think the Dartboard idea is a fine one for venting anger at genuine annoyances.

I agree that we need some love too though. It's very easy to just show off and flex one's ego muscle when 'praising' stuff too.

The difference is not really one of subject matter; merely quality of writing.
