Billie Piper: gone for good from Doctor Who

Simon Brew

Steven Moffat's not the biggest Rose Tyler fan out there, apparently...

In retrospect, the return of Billie Piper as Rose Tyler to Doctor Who in its fourth season wasn’t really a raging success. Seemingly introduced just to be farmed off with a Doctor clone to play with for all eternity, the character had run its course when she was sent into one of those can-never-be-unlocked-until-a-script-conference-says-so parallel universes back at the end of Doomsday.

Which makes it all the more refreshing that Steven Moffat has already confirmed that the character won’t be returning to the show, at least not while it’s under his stewardship. It seems, although he hasn’t said it directly, that Moffat wasn’t the biggest Rose Tyler fan, describing her as ‘needy’.

There’s no word yet on future companions for the Doctor, and given that Moffat’s season five doesn’t go before the cameras until next year, we simply expect a series of guest stars across the four forthcoming specials before anything firm is announced.

I feel the urge to buy and use a kazoo.

"Needy"? Um.

I hated her ending. Though, how else could you have gotten rid of a clone and rose? It kinda had to be done, unless you killed them both. Still, I did like Rose, it's sad to hear she'll never return.

I like Billie Piper, she seems really cool.

Deeply unimpressed with the clone ending and not really a Rose fan, but on the other hand Piper did perform better than my admittedly low expectations. But I think its time to move and that includes no more Daleks or Cybermen for a couple of series... Xmas special...ah...

Moffat's the one who should have got the boot, in my opinion. He's full of himself, thinks everything he does is wonderful (when he can't follow continuity worth a damn and introduces characters out of nowhere and expects the audience to love them without showing us why we should) and clearly thinks nothing of insulting his predecessor. Rose is NOT needy, and the duplicate Doctor is NOT a clone. He is a regeneration, but half-human. Actually, I'm glad Rose won't be coming back in Moffat's tenure, because I remember what he did to her in Girl in the Fireplace - shoved her to the sidelines, as he's done to all companions since. Like a number of DW fans, I plan to stop watching once Moffat takes over, as he clearly has little respect for the fans or for characterisations as they've been established in the last four years (and in the last forty years). I'm expecting to see the ratings tank from 2010 onwards.

Clearly I'm a Rose fan but she has run her course and Piper is off doing other great things. I'm looking forward to Moffat giving us another great companion that I can love in love with like I did Rose and Donna. Please no more Martha, talk about needy!

I Loved Rose with the Ninth Doctor. I thought she had better chemistry with Eccleston. She was okay with Tennant, but I didn't think they worked as well together. I feel like the whole "Love" thing was forced, and just didn't see it between them. I thought Martha was a much better companion. I thought she fit better with Tennant, and her crush was believable and understandable. Plus, Martha saved the Earth in ways Rose didn't do (Rose may have helped the doctor close the rift, but she didn't walk the Earth and convince people to believe in the Doctor). I even liked Donna's chemistry with the Tenth Doctor better than Rose's.
