Doctor Who: rebooting the Cybermen?
Simon Brew
There's still one episode left of Doctor Who this year... and rumour has it, an old foe will be back. Again.
There’s still, despite all the talk of the end of Doctor Who’s fourth season, one episode to go this year, namely the Russell T Davies-penned Christmas special. If you want to watch that episode with no spoilers at all, then read no further.
Still here? Right then. The talk is that the Cybermen are about to undergo a little bit of a change (again), and that a new mutant variant is on the way. The revived Doctor Who, of course, has already reimagined the Cybermen, having them created by Trigger from Only Fools and Horses in a parallel universe. This time round, though, it’s meet the Cybershade, and the early word is that this is a variant of the Cybermen that’s more deadly than ever. That kind of thing.
Of course, there’s still a suspicion that this is just the wheeling out of one of Doctor Who’s main foes, and no matter how deadly they make the Cybershade, you know that it’ll sell lots of toys, and still be back again in the future. But hell, we liked the revived Cybermen last time, and we wait and see what they’ll do with them this time round.
The new episode will broadcast – you’ve guessed it! – on December 25th, and it’s already been confirmed that it’ll co-star David Morrissey, a potential tip for a future Doctor…

Re: Doctor Who: rebooting the Cybermen? I'm looking forward to seeing the Christmas special and the other 4 specials throughout 2009. I just hope David Tennant remains the Doctor through these specials and at least all of series 5. However, based on all the articles I've been reading the past 2 weeks, I believe David is gone after this Christmas special. The Doctor Who team is being very secretive. At first I thought they were taking a break until 2010 so David could perform in Hamlet. But now, I think they took the break to help continue the secrets of a new (11th) Doctor. The break helps with the buzzing of fans to keep them guessing! I was hoping that David would at least do one more full year.
Re: Doctor Who: rebooting the Cybermen? I will miss Tennant as the Doctor. That's not to say I won't love a new actor. I didn't think Tennant could be as good as Eccleston, and now I don't know which I like better (I like the Ninth Doctor best when I'm watching him, and the Tenth Doctor best when I'm watching HIM).
I would like a new enemy. I feel like there was a lot of retreading in what few series we've had of the New Who.
The Ninth Doctor seeing the Cyberman head in Series One made it seem like the Cyberman are all in the past. the ones that we meet in Series 2 were from a parallel world, so that was one way to bring them back, but geez.
I mean it was great to have the Dalek's back, but I'm sick of them, too (I keep going back to how the Doctor wiped out his home world to destroy them too, then one survived, then more surived, then more and more and more . . . ad nauseum. I hate that Gallifrey died for nothing and the Doctor was that stupid).
MOffett has created some great one-off creatures (weeping angels, the repeating entity), but I don't think any of those can be a nemises.
In the whole galaxy, surely there's somthing that can be a good menace!
Re: Doctor Who: rebooting the Cybermen? Just pointing out - you've referred to the 2008 Christmas special as the last episode of series four, when it is actually the first episode of series five (because a) the Doctor Who production year runs from June-June, b) the production code for the next episode will be 5x00 and c) if it's anything like the previous three Christmas specials it will be released on DVD as part of the succeeding, not precedint, series). |
