Doctor Who: new speculation about the next Doctor

Simon Brew

Who will be stepping into the shoes of the Doctor? There appears to be a running favourite...

Last weekend’s Doctor Who cliffhanger has posed a series of questions, many of which we’ve spent the week trying to answer. But it’s also thrown up the issue of who David Tennant’s replacement in the Tardis will be.

Our current thinking – and this isn’t a spoiler, as it’s just guesswork – is that the regeneration at the end of The Stolen Earth will fail, and we suspect that we’ll have more than one Doctor running around throughout Journey’s End. Noting that David Morrissey has been cast in the Christmas special, we wonder whether he could turn out to be one of the Doctors (which is a current discussion board topic across the interweb), but we suspect not. For the time being, our money is on David Tennant being Doctor Who.

However, the current favourite appears to be Robert Carlyle. We’ve already reported that William Hill have been taking odds on the new Doctor, and it seems that there’s been a flurry of activity this week. Tennant still isn’t giving any clues as to where his future lies, while now it’s believed that Robert Carlyle would be interested in the role.

Hmmmm….

Not that I know anything, but Tennant will be the Doctor for a good few more hours of the show yet.

Hopefully. Am getting fed up with all these regenerations. In my time they lasted a bit longer than a couple of series. Plus what's going to happen when he runs out of regenerations, he does have a limited number you know. Plus (again), Robert Carlyle is pretty famous already and will probably only do a season or two as he'll have other work, so he won't last long either. They need someone who really wants the job and not someone who sees it as solely a boost to their career or a stepping stone to better things. Sorry, that's just how I feel.

Write your comment here... What? David Tennant leaving Dr Who - and there was me thinking he was having such fun. Any one taking any bets on the replacement being a woman - this being the age of equality and all that? Lets just wait and see.

i dont think it will be anyone well know already, both doctors have been fresh to tv, but i havnt noticed any tiny bit of upset in tennant in any extras so i still firmly belive he will be back,

vampire - Tennant has been in the role for three years now, which is about average. When you say 'in your day' do you actually mean 'when Tom Baker was the Doctor'? Cos, you know, his 7 year stint was way against the norm. Also, worrying about the regeneration limit is nonsense. You don't think the show can navigate around such an obviously arbitrary limit?

Also, Aidan Gillen is my new favourite suggestion for the new Doctor. He was ace in Queer as Folk and he's beyond ace in The Wire. Aidan Gillen for The Doctor, plz.

Apparently there's a massive-big press release currently embargoed until after Journey's End is shown. Any guesses what it might be about?

Write your comment here... I reckon Tennant will be leaving the show. He's said that he's going to be in the Christmas specials, but I reckon that was only so he didn't ruin the surprise of him regenerating, like when Keith Allen denied all knowledge of Lucy Griffiths leaving Robin Hood so as not to ruin the surprise of Marian dying in the last episode. I think the replacement will be a relatively but not entirely unknown TV actor, as that is what both Tennant and Eccleston were when they started. I don't think it will be a big Hollywood actor like Robert Carlyle. It will be someone more like that guy out of Queer As Folk like some people are suggesting. As for the rumour that it's going to be a woman, it might not be as unlikely as it sounds. A while ago Russell T Davies got asked by some kid on some kids' TV show whether he would ever have a female Doctor, and he said that, although he didn't have any plans for one, he thought it was an intersting idea that he wouldn't rule out, so who knows? As for Billie Piper, I reckon Davies might just have had her chacter killed off by the Daleks. She obviously wouldn't have left the show after the second series if she wanted to continue being a regular cast member. I think she only came back for the end of the fourth series to tie off the loose ends. She was the only assistant the modern day Doctor has been in love with, and unless she's coming back for another series, which I doubt, she may as well get killed off for a bit drama and also some closure. We'll just have to wait and see. Only one day to go now.

I don't know, I have a feeling this whole regeneration thing wont happen the way people expect it and we'll be seeing that lovely little tussled haired Doctor for quite some time.
