Doctor Who: has David Tennant's replacement been found?
Simon Brew
Speculation over the next Doctor Who continues, with two names now circling the TARDIS...
Published on Dec 18, 2007
On the one hand, Jennifer Saunders is set to go where Joanna Lumley trod before and become Doctor Who – but only for a single episode. Lumley’s appearance was brief, in a Children in Need special, but the rumour mill suggests that Saunders as the Time Lord would be a little more serious. That said, if true, her tenure would be restricted to just the one journey, which may form one of the 2009 trio of specials. Producers are said to be keen.
Longer term, the fickle finger of speculation, that has thus far pointed at James Nesbitt, has turned to Welsh actor Rhys Ifans.
Ifans is perhaps best known for his role in the Hugh Grant smash Notting Hill, and rumours swashing around suggest that it’s his name that’s now in pole position for 2010’s fifth season of the show. More, as usual, as we get it, but Ifans would certainly be an interesting choice....

Yup - both of those will work. I can see Jennifer Saunders having the right mix needed for the Doctor, a bit of class and style, a prim (even cocky and arrogant) persona and a great line in wit and sense of humour. Also Ifans another good choice and see him being a very Jon Pertwee style doctor with a manic grin and a sense of fun. Of course we will never get the man made to play the Doctor which is of course (Why is he not yet a Sir) Stephen Fry.

Of course! Stephen Fry. It's so obvious. Good call.
