Doctor Who: is John Simm the next Doctor?
Simon Brew
Another Doctor Who rumour! But would John Simm really be an ideal choice for the 11th Doctor?
Published on Nov 12, 2007
Yet the latest rumour to hit the Sunday tabloids took us a little by surprise nonetheless. Because one name now being strongly linked with the role of the Doctor John Simm. The same John Simm who pretty much murdered the character of The Master in the last series.
Now of course in Doctor Who lore, there's no reason why Simm couldn't be the Doctor, and it wouldn't be the first time an actor took on the title role after previously appearing as a different character (Colin Baker in Arc of Infinity, fact fans). But even so, this would be a tough one to swallow, surely?
The obligatory denial has already come out of the BBC's media machine, and we suspect this rumour will prove to be incorrect. But it does hint that rumours of Tennant's own demise have not been exaggerated, and that'll mean that lots more rumours of potential new Doctors will follow.
Stephen Fry, anyone?

Just because you can change Doctors every season doesn't mean you should.

'Damn it John'...I would love to see a Stephen Fry Doctor.. going back to a Tom Baker eccentic of mad hair, wit and a whole brain load of knowledge that he would use to outfox all bad guys in the universe... and if that doesnt work then of course he can rely on a LOT OF SHOUTING...MEEEAAAHHH...

Aaaaargh, Russell T workarounds, don't you just love 'em... Who can forget Martha Jones' 'sister' eh?
So basically, next season they intend to bring back a character apparently permanently trapped (Rose) via some (probably ludicrous) piece of goalpost shifting, and then make the Doctor look like The Master... All with the help of TV's most annoying comic 'talent'. Tre-f***ing-mendous, I can't wait... I'm moist at the prospect.
Not only that, but Simm was a master that made Anthony Ainley's stint in the role look reserved...
Am I alone in not getting the whole John Simm thing..? He wasn't even close to being the best thing in Life On Mars. He was actually a rather stunted stooge for (very good) gags. His best moments in the second series were as a mute plasticine figure ferchrissakes... Don't even get me started on the 'Who finale.
Richard E. Grant, James Nesbitt, Stephen Fry (please God, yes), Pinky and Perky, Alvin Chipmunk, Jordan or Allan Carr all look better options. I know, GET GRAHAM NORTON... He ticks all the right boxes!
Actually, what about Ardal O'Hanlon..? I think he'd be great... No, really.

... And if you're going to destroy continuity to start using previous actors who've played The Master in the lead role, can we not have Derek Jacobi..?
Purlease?

I'm with Robert on this one. Bring in Fry and end the madness.
