Peter Kay stiffs his fans again!

Simon Brew

The avid collector could have paid around £60 for three DVDs that have a great deal of crossed over material. 'Rip-off' and 'pillaging the people who pay your wages' barely covers it.

Stand-up comedian Peter Kay has another live DVD out this Christmas - only much of the material will be very familiar...

Published on Oct 31, 2007

We're big fans of stand-up comedy at DoG, and particularly enjoy the raft of stand-up DVDs that emerge every Christmas. Last year's choice was the achingly ace Dara O'Briain release, which we now recommend to everyone in sight. Including you.

We've quite enjoyed Peter Kay material in the past, too. However, he caused some controversy a year or two back over a DVD release linked to his record-breaking 'Mum Wants A Bungalow Tour'. Back in 2003, he released a DVD on a show from that tour filming in Bolton. Costing £19.99, it ran for 84 minutes and was really quite good.

However, two years later, out popped another release: Peter Kay Live At Manchester Arena. It cost £21.99, and the clue to this one was in the small print on the cover. "A special farewell performance of the Mum Wants A Bungalow Tour", it said. It was special alright: the main feature included material seen on the previous release, but was edited down to less than 50 minutes. It was an outrage, and many people rightly got upset about it.

And now, browsing the Christmas release lists, it seems that Kay is stiffing his fans again. Selling for £21.99 this time is a 77-minute Best Of compilation DVD called Stand Up Ukay. This time, the people who paid to make Kay rich and famous in the first place can shell out to "see all his greatest moments". There's little sign of any fresh stand-up material, which his army of fans would be happy to pay out for. Instead, the avid collector could have paid around £60 for three DVDs that have a great deal of crossed over material. 'Rip-off' and 'pillaging the people who pay your wages' barely covers it. We're happy to be proved wrong in the disc does turn out to be archive material, or is made up primarily of previously unseen work. But it won't be.

So instead of being fleeced again, we're giving Stand Up Ukay a miss, and instead trying out the upcoming releases from Mark Thomas, Alan Carr, Marcus Brigstocke and Sean Hughes. Maybe they won't charge us all for the same stuff over and over.

In fairness, even if it were a DVD of completely new material from Peter Kay, it'd be shit.

I really like Peter Kay. I thought his book was quite good, and seeing him live was a treat. But these DVD releases really leave a horribly sour taste, from someone who otherwise comes across as down to earth. Hmmm.

Alan Carr: not seen much of his stuff, so like giving new stand-up material a try. Mind you, last year I tried the Paddy McGuinness disc. Shockingly bad, and a desperately unfunny man.

I really like Peter Kay and his book was laugh out loud funny, however it looks like he is running out of material and it seems that this dvd proves it. His is only a young bloke ( 35?) and has up until this point used his childhood, teen years and family as material, but since the groundbreaking and very funny stuff he did five years ago he hasnt produced anything new.. really coz nothing has happened to him apart from becoming famous. I wonder if like Gervais that Peter Kay has had his best years and that now he will coast on them and produce dvd after dvd of stuff that is re-hashed old bits and pieces. I hope not as his enthusiasm and fun for life, as well as his passion for Bullseye always makes me smile but i have a feeling that the creative well might have dried up and this is the beginning of the end

Phoenix Nights was a wonderful show, and That Peter Kay Thing was amusing (in a similar way), but I've never really enjoyed his stand up much. The scariest thing about this article was that, Simon, you say you're looking forward to Alan Carr's standup DVD. Dear God, why!?

Alan Carr was ok - I saw him live last year. He had a great line about his thick next door neighbour knocking on his door and him replying 'no...im not reading you the Argos catalogue again'. Comedy wise try Ross Noble as none of his dvds are the same as he waffles on about insane stuff and no two of his shows are the same. Other than than try Bill Bailey or go for the classic Eddie Izzard dvd as they are superb.

Peter Kay's alright if you like 90 minutes of jokes about Nans. I can't say that there are many UK stand-ups that I'm really into. I think Jimmy Carr is much funnier at stand-up than he is counting down a top one hundred of something. In his book, he also quotes an Alan Carr joke that is really funny, which is something like "My boss used to have a thing behind her desk that said 'you don't have to be mad to work here, but it helps'. Of course, it was written in her own shit..." There are some good American stand-ups at the moment. My current favourite is a guy called Doug Stanhope, who had a TV special on Channel 4 on Friday. Look him up on Youtube (not around people wo are easilt offended, mind). Also worth checking out are David Cross(he of Arrested Development fame), Eugene Mirman or even geek legend Brian Posehn.

David Cross is wonderful, so tirelessly cruel and cynical. Excellent though. In a similar vein is Patton Oswalt (who plays Spence in King of Queens), really funny stuff. I think Jimmy Carr's standup is pretty awful, to be honest - not a fan of the constant one-liner thing, I find him awfully lacking in invention and he's a smug get. UK comedians I do love, though - Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, Eddie Izzard (old stuff though, Circle and Sexie were quite poor), Ricky Gervais (even though it's now uncool to like him), Ross Noble, Dave Gorman (does this really count?)

I agree with the comment about Peter Kay stiffing his fans - I used to like him and Phoenix Nights was a classic. It appears that money has taken over and his comedy has been replaced with greed. On the other hand - check out Alan Carr - Tooth Fairy (I never laughed so much in ages!, as camp as a cucumber...a right queen!) and Jimmy Carr - Comedian which is equally brilliant. Perhaps Peter Kay should go back to what he does best and get back on the road - doing live stuff - then he can appreciate the millions he's made instead of boring us all with his stories of "how poor he used to be". The king is dead....long live the queen!
