Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman TV series in the works?

Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman

Writer Neil Gaiman’s much-loved graphic novel, The Sandman, could be heading to the small screen soon courtesy of Warner Bros. TV…

Published on Sep 2, 2010

Neil Gaiman's revival of Jack Kirby's 70s Sandman series, with its intelligent writing and stunning David McKean artwork, is widely regarded as one of Vertigo's finest publications to date.

And while a big screen adaptation of The Sandman has apparently been trapped in development hell since the late 90s, there are now stories floating around that suggest that the comic could be in the early stages of development for a television series.

According to Heat Vision, Warner Bros. TV is attempting to purchase the rights from DC, and is in talks with writers and producers about its adaptation for the small screen.

The story also mentions Supernatural creator Eric Kripke as being "at the top of the list", though this has yet to be substantiated. More news on a potential Sandman series as we get it.

TV producers and the like always seem to mention how their shows have "Bibles"; well, unless Gaiman's works are considered gospel, then I, for one, won't even bother watching. But, if Gaiman's works ARE gospel, and he's involved in this production, then this could be classic.

Is definetly a series that would have more promise as a TV series than as a feature film. Now lets see the completely innapropriate person they cast as Death

I'd love to see this series, but this could quite easily go very, VERY wrong. I hope they get someone who can do justice to the source material. BTW, Will this have any bearing on the rumoured Death - High Cost of Living film? And personally, I felt that the books didn't need quite so many established DC super characters.

"And personally, I felt that the books didn't need quite so many established DC super characters." I'll admit that I haven't read all the Sandman GNs but after the first novel I remember them distancing themselves from the superhero characters. It's possible that they happened to turn up in later books I missed, but I got the impression from Gaiman's introductory blurb in volume one that it was his intention to leave them behind.

And yes, I think a series could work very well.

I was mainly referring to Vol. 1, which features the most DC cameos, but could have managed quite well using only Constantine and Dr Destiny. In later epiosdes Fury 2 has a vital role in the series, Wesley Dodds adventures run parallel, and the Element Girl issue offers a whole new perspective on Death, so they should stay. Some make jokey appearances in Vol 5- as a spoof comic featuring "Hyperman" and "Weirdzo" Vol 10- at the wake, though the Sandman stands perfectly well on its own.

Dave McKean largely did the cover work for Sandman, a large part of its visual appeal lies in the sheer range and diversity of artistic styles used to tell the various different stories. Any chance this could get greenlit as an animation series instead of live - action - probably the only way to stay true to the look/feel of the original..
